I always wanted to make an official thread.

Well here we go. Last year's effort was a poorly put together game, so will we get more of the same, or are we in for something better.

Used to be a mega fan of these games, but they've not improved much since PES 2005

Might be getting FIFA this year, FIFA 08 was great!

PS, look at pic 5 - http://images.pesfan.com/pes2009/screenshots/pes2009-5.jpg

What the hell is the Argentina defender on the right hand side of the screen doing!!!

It's little things like that that ruin PES!

FIFA has much better AI - http://electronicarts.ru/Images/screenshots/173320-(06-13-2008)-02.jpg

Im definately waiting it out this year, after last year, theres no sense in blindly buying a PES game. I bought the weaker of two games last year (although both are flawed, atleast i can get an online game on fifa without the opponent teleporting halfway up the pitch)

Hahaha.
First time I played PES08 online I was laughing my ass off.
Of course soon after, when patches came and did nothing, the laughter turned into pain.

PES08 was EMBARRASSING for Konami, not just online, the whole match engine was flawed and like 98% of the animations were recycled from the PS2 version.
They clearly can't step up to next-gen or CAN THEY?

I'm REALLY optimistic as always when it comes PES and I do think they can pull back.
Hey at least we know PES08 is the worse we've seen of PES series and even that wasn't TOO bad so PES09 should at least be 'good'.

Screens never do football games (or any game really) justice, I gotta see the gameplay in motion.

Konami's motto for PES09 is "Minimal Fuss, Maximum Impact (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/news/minimal-fuss-maximum-impact/)" so they might not announce too many features or hype the game up too much, they'll probably just let the media previews do the talk.

PES08 was a major step down but I still enjoyed the core gameplay more then fifa. Referees in FIFA were awful, on rails passing was annoying as hell and the team ratings/difficulty didn't have a curve almost at all.

I couldnt agree with you more. Im sure the online portion will be fixed this time round also as Konami seem to have gained ample experience in this department since last year.

Seems like the kind of crap the old FIFA producers at EA Sports used to come out with til Peter Moore and David Rutter came in and took over.

Well, David Rutter was behind FIFA 07, which was the biggest development of a FIFA game since it went 3D with FIFA 96. Since then I've not heard one stupid slogan from the FIFA producers...

And also it is expected to be shown in a playable form at Leipzig Game Show.

We'll find out then if no news is a good or a bad thing.

Some big news coming!

Liverpool & Man Utd Licensed In PES 2009

Forget Merseyside Red… strong rumours coming through that Liverpool FC and Manchester United are this year’s two licensed Barclays Premiership clubs in PES 2009! We are currently working hard behind the scenes to confirm this rumour but as it stands the rumour has solid ground. As with the previous rumours we have posted this season we are confident that this one will be true. Stay tuned for more lads….
http://www.winningelevenblog.com/news/liverpool-man-utd-licensed-in-pes-2009/

And an interview that makes the game promising (or at least better than the shit hole PES08 was):

With regards to the gameplay, would you say it resembled PES6 or PES2008, and what aspects differ.

The gameplay is PES2008, the way it should have been. You can no longer run straight through everyone with Etoo or Ronaldinho without any effort but you can beat players by running if you time your moves correctly. It is very realistic and the AI in defence and attack is massively improved.

The refereeing in PES2008 was abysmal, has it got any better? (please elaborate with examples i.e bringing play back etc)

The refereeing is probably the same although the collisions are much better so the decisions are often correct. The diving works better too. Managed to win a pen with an expertly timed dive over a defenders outstretched leg - looked class.

PES2008 definitely favoured the attacking side with scoring being particularly easy. Is this the case in 2009?

Shots don’t seem to be as easy as 2008 and the keepers cover their area much better. Obviously if you get up to them and pass across them its easy but that’s the same in real life. The defence also like to play cat and mouse with the offside trap so it’s harder to get in to create the easier chances.

Have we finally moved into the “Next Gen” or are we still polishing a turd (graphics wise)

The graphics are similar but the lighting effects (floodlights/sun etc) are spectacular. It really adds to the feel of the game, definitely the best I have seen in a sports game but I haven’t seen Fifa 09 yet

PES2008’s goalkeepers were total garbage. Please tell me they’ve improved.

They seemed to have improved but I can’t be 100% sure. I haven’t seen one soft shot being fumbled and tapped in though so that’s a good thing.

Who are the officially licensed England League teams?

Liverpool & Man Utd although most sides have nearly every player’s real face.

Please list the leagues included.

The same as last time, England, France, Spain, Holland & Italy

Any major non leagued teams removed or added?

Off the top of my head I think the only change is Zenith St Petersburg replacing Bayern Munich

Off the top of ur head, how many stadiums are there, and which famous ones are new? i.e stamford bridge etc

There are 19 stadiums, the only new one I remember is Wembley, although I suspect Old Trafford & Anfield will be there as part of the licensing agreement with the 2 clubs

You mentioned “become a legend” mode. Can you explain this in more detail? & how it relates to the “new exciting online mode”

You create a player and start off at a team - A made up side (Think it’s a youth side). You control just yourself (With the Be a Pro mode camera from FIFA). As you play your player improves in stats and sides become interested and make offers for your services, I had Hull & Everton after me.

When you save your player stats, you can then take him online to team up with other “legends”. This adds a whole new side to the game as you can actually play in a side day in day out and have leagues set up etc. I haven’t really got far into it but it is a great addition in my opinion.

does this imply that u can play online with other ppl playing in the same team as u???

yeah. I am not sure how many you can have but I have heard its 7 vs 7, don’t quote me though as this is 2nd hand info (tough I’m quoting you anyway!)

Any word on online lag yet?

I don’t work on the online section of the game but I am assured that the lag is 100% a thing of the past and this years will be the smoothest yet.

Of the big names, who has been greatly improved stat-wise, and have any of the silly super slags been downgraded?

Most of the stats are the same as last year (not completely finished yet) but Arshavin is better but not amazing. The slags dont need to be downgraded as the collisions are calculated better so its just a matter of defending them right. In my opinion your league wouldn’t need to remove any players as Messi can be handled by a competent defender as long as you time your challenges.

If you had to be disappointed with one thing, what would it be?

There are a couple for me (But I could be over critical). Crossing seems to be a bit floaty (from corners) and the shooting has completely changed again so it needs a good practise again. Shooting like PES 2008 will result in you scoring 0. This isn’t so much a bad thing but a nuisance.
Also on the be a legend mode the user is unable to create a goalkeeper or defender to play with which is a shame

I am disappointed that Bayern have gone and the master league hasn’t changed - even the menus are the same.

Overall its the best footy game out there by a country mile up to now. Roll on October for the release.

Be A Pro Become a Legend mode sounds interesting.
Apparently Konami did this in one of the Japanese releases of the game and it worked great so maybe this will be awesome.

Less goalkeeper fumbles, no more just holding R1 and sprinting until you reach the goal, slower crosses, better detection etc etc....

Lots of nice stuff in there.

I think i'm the only one in the world who doesn't care that MasterLeague hasn't changed though keep in mind it's still an early build so yeah......

Much more to come at Leipzig Game Show.

I think this will be a pretty solid title.
PES08 mostly sucked because it was broken so even if this is just a fixed PEs08, it should be great.

As I said gameplay DID change:
Less goalkeeper fumbles, no more just holding R1 and sprinting until you reach the goal, slower crosses, better detection etc etc....
Though I guess a better way of putting it would be "the gameplay got fixed".

Can't wait to see some vids of it.
Hopefully it doesn't feel like a fast motion comedy sketch show like PEs08 did.

Have you ever played PES08 on the 360? It's soooo much better, it's terrible that the PS3 version managed to get so badly screwed up.

masteratt
07-23-2008, 10:06 PM
I've played all the version (well, PC, X360 and PS3).

Disliked them all equally.
The game plain sucked.
They made it arcadey and they couldn't even do that properly.

It was the first PES game that I stopped playing before the next one came out.
Come to think of it I didn't even finish a league in PEs08, I disliked it THAT much.
Luckily FIFA08 is playable so that is giving me my football fix though it's no where great as a good PEs game.

Kiwi
07-23-2008, 10:09 PM
Well, they never really change, so I'm surprised you hated it that much.

I played the PS3 version a lot, because I did a co-op Master League with my housemate. He bought a 360 recently and got a copy of the game with it, and it's ridiculous how much better the game is. Haven't tried online though, I wouldn't be too surprised if the online is just as bad.

Anyway, PES09, BE BETTER, DAMN IT!

Better graphics, no slowdown, slightly better gameplay. That's how it's better. The 360 controller is fine for the game. It's weird though, on the PS2 and PS3 versions, I've always used the d-pad, but I find it a lot easier with the analog on the 360 one.

The only one I agree from that list is the slightly better frame-rate on the 360.
But it wasn't like it made the game unplayable on the PS3 (it was the gameplay that did that lol)

Graphics look okay....But the style is a bit cartoonish for my liking, that's my only problem with it.
Other than that....Yeah, never gave a damn about how a PES game looked.

I know that with Pro, the graphics have never been at the forefront. But you really do notice a huge difference on the 360 version. The colours are a lot more vibrant, and everything just looks a lot smoother.

and Pro 4. Aww man, I hated that one! :P

Well, we can't always agree on everything. Sometimes on the PS3 version, the framerate got really bad. Free-kicks on the edge of the box, corners, basically any time where there was a box full of players. It's bearable, but we really shouldn't be saying, "well, I can put up with this drop in framerate, because I love my PS3 so much".

As for the actual gameplay, there are a lot more things you can do on the 360 version. There are a lot more different player movements, little tricks, and other bits and pieces. With the amount of time I've spent playing both versions, and all the other games for that matter, it's pretty easy to notice the differnces.

We mainly play on my housemate's Samsung HDTV. I've played it in SD, but that doesn't make it any worse. I'm surprised you haven't really noticed it, sometimes it's impossible to miss. Although I guess it could be to do with the actual console, or maybe the disk, I dunno...

As for the PSI matches, we'll definitely have to do that. It's a shame I can't apply the house rule that we have for the game here. Concede 10 or get 5 sent off, and get a pint of water poured onto your face :-D

After the upgrades PS3 slowdowns improved somewhat, but I think it has got mostly to do with the point of view you are using in the game. The closer views might tend to have slowdowns in crowded situations but I never use them, only play that "semi-birds-eye view" where you can see wide area of the field. The replays always have occasional slowdowns though.

Have you guys ever tried out the mode where you only play one man?

Everybody who I've heard trying it out say it changes the game altogether; whereas in the normal mode you change the player all the time I think the AI can't cope with the situation, but if you play only one guy you can ask for short/long passes, through-passes, the friendly AI even attacks with some skill if you are attacking with them.

Having not tried that mode myself either can't say if it's true or not but at least it's worth a try if you otherwise don't hate your PES.

Raitei
07-24-2008, 11:13 AM
i remember trying that once, but i got really confused.. Plus the camera view that would go behind the players back, stay the same in the second half, so you end up attacking towards the camera, which can be confusing

Gegenki
07-24-2008, 02:24 PM
i loved that mode. Its an awesome way to do it. Its kinda hard though. You don't know whether you should go for glory or let the computer finish it off - Not as satisfying.

I was playing pro on the 360 today. I hate using the analogue. And the 360 version imo is a bit worse for passing than the PC version. Duno about the PS3 version - hardly played it. By a bit worse - i mean it passes to the wrong player but theres a slight possibility that that is down to analogue usage

The guys over at PELLUK have done it again! This time, news of a new feature allowing players to upload MP3’s into your game!

Click here [http://www.pelluk.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1323&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a] to see the post.

Now news on this is a bit random right now as I’ve been told different things, but with this feature you can upload your own recorded chants or official ones into the game - letting you assign them to any team in the game!

In the post made by PELLUK, it also says that edit mode is the same as in PES 2008. I dont agree with that statement. Perhaps similar, yes, but some key additions (that we’ll talk about in the future podcast) make it clearly different.

Once again, Thanks to Sparky for the news!

The game is so different, for a while I thought the controls were broken then I noticed it was just me....

YES!!!!!!! :D
That's exactly my thought before every AWESOME PES :)

In PES08 you could just turn right and left, get past them and shoot into the corner............In PES09, no chance.
Everything changed, passing players is MUCH harder, shooting, passing, it all changed.

When you are defending against a tactical player, you are worried about not him passing you but him making that perfect pass.

Yeah it's pretty much confirmed at this stage.

However from watching vids, reading NON-biased previews, it seems to be PES08 shitness with a little bit of improvements.

I never thought I'll say this but; I'm not even going to purchase this years PES.
I don't want to support a shit game and then for Konami think "oh it's okay, we can sell these half assed versions so no need to try hard and improve".

FIFA08 was very good and FIFA09 looks awesome so, for the first time in a looong while, I have to say in my personal opinion, FIFA> PES.....(that felt wrong even typing :( DAMN YOU KONAMI! get back on track!)

the major flaw they made was when they decided to make defending more difficult. you could turn and beat any player by simply dribbling, and that pretty much removed all the fun of trying to sweat for your goals.

plus it is very easy to go on and score from crosses, if you master it, you can score with 90% of all your crosses, no matter how good the defense, and that makes no sense

I reckon this one will keep me busy easily till PES10 (whereas I only played PES08 for like a month).

So overall, it's what everyone said "It's the game PES08 should have been." which just isn't enough but I'm content (just about).

As for FIFA09 vs PES09, PES plays more smooth that's for sure and the ball physics seem better to me (it just flies in FIFA, looks stupid) so I'll probably be back to being a PES man this season though it should be noted I'm not that pleased with both (even though EA made the more improvements, it's not that satisfying still).

Yea, this is what the last game should've been like, the 360 version of PES08.

It plays well, but they always have played well. There isn't really any difference in the gameplay, other than a few little tweaks, which has always been the case. Graphically it's pretty much the same, except this one looks a lot more vibrant than the PS3 version of the last one, and I didn't notice any of the horrific slowdown that was present in the last one.

So all in all, it's Pro. Can't really say a lot else about it.

GF them both, not buying either. Fifa got the presentation without the game play, PES got game play with no presentation.

That's the way it's always been.

Well, after playing both games, on both consoles, I can't see why so many of you are opting to move over to FIFA, I really don't. The gameplay just feels so stiff in comparison to Pro. But hey, I can't stop you doing it, I guess you guys are seeing something I don't

I picked up a copy of Pro on the 360 yesterday. Dunno if they're doing the same deal wherever you are, but ASDA were selling the game on both consoles for £27, so I picked up a copy.

Yet again, the 360 version is visibly better, and has slightly smoother controls. I can understand if there are some slight visual differences between the two, but to have the gameplay slightly different just doesn't make sense, they're supposed to be the same game, right? This happened with the last game, the 360 version had moves and other little things the PS3 version didn't have. I don't get it.

I don't have problem with that, that's your choice, I just don't see what the attraction is with FIFA. What do you find in it that makes it better than Pro?

with fifa... when i want to do something.. when i want to play the ball where i want to play it... it goes there. Pro is hit and miss, especially this year.

Online play also, FIFA actually works online... PES is terrible online

Lastly fifa seems nice and fluid to me, looks great so i didnt see the attraction in pro.

Having the presentation and liscences helps, but definately doesn't decide anything for me (been pro for years)

I will say that the online on Pro is a hell of a lot better this year. I've played three or four matches online, and I haven't experienced any lag yet. The lag last year made it practically unplayable, so there's a definite improvement. It's odd that you think that FIFA is more fluid, because it felt the exact opposite to me, and it just felt like I couldn't do what I wanted to do, because the time between me doing something and the player doing it was delayed.

Oh well, good luck with your time on the dark side :P

hah... its not like i've bought a lifelong membership...
if 2010 is beter than fifa 10... ill buy pes

as for that slight bit of button lag in fifa... i know what you mean... i just tend to anticipate moves and so do everything a step ahead and it tends to work beautifully.

Maybe pro isn't as bad on the 360 (onlinewise)

PEs feels like a bunch of super robots running around in hyper speed compared to the more steady pace of FIFA.

Also FIFA has PES CRUSHED in terms of animation this year.
It just plays more realistically from my experience which in football games to me equals more fun.

FIFA09, yeah.
At uni though, online is blocked :(
Except for CallOfDuty4 for some reason...

If that's why you were asking in the first place.

Also brag: Won the 1st year of Manager Mode with Arsenal on Legendary, 6mins.....14 point ahead of the 2nd place. woot! (i admit that wasn't very realistic lol but the matches usually are)

Its the fact that they haven't done anything new in Pro.
I first got pro 11 years ago, when they had all these moves fifa didnt have like through ball.
Fifa was run (back when you had to press triangle to sprint) pass lob and shoot.
It was like playing in a different dimension. I decided there was never any need to go back to fifa
Now both games are about the same, anything you can do in pro you can do in fifa, you can even cancel stuff in fifa now, one of pros biggest points being super cancel - but Fifa went further with more moves - things you are actually likely to use to beat your opponent - first touch - off the ball control.

It used to be the case that I would lose my first few pro games and hate it, then realise the new changes and love it. Now it seems like they are just standing still while fifa are moving forward

-also i dont remember when it was, i think maybe pes6, they totally messed up the player running speeds in pro.

Anyone else here playing FIFA? I been playing the Be a Pro season and so far I am liking it quite a bit. There is still some problems as people said with button lag, but the animations are impressive and the overall presentation is stellar.

^Wish you could do a normal league with 2 player coop online...That seems like it would be really fun
