View Full Version : Civ 4 or Rev?
I want to play my first ever Civ game. I tried Civ 4 very briefly and I played the Revolution demo as well. for those who spent time with both, which would you recommend as my first Civ? I want to be impressed and get into the series. Civ 4 got the best ratings. but should Revolution be my first game or should I play Civ 4 since it perhaps seen as better compared to what Rev. showed in the demo?
cheers.

Civ4 is in more depth.
If you are looking for a serious games that last hours, get Civ4.
If you are new (as you are) and don't really wanna bother too much with details etc, get Rev.

From what I have played and heard of Civ Rev, Civ 4 seems to be the better game in my opinion, by Civ Rev would be easier to get into.

Civ Rev looks to be a sleeper hit for the consoles. If you have friends with PCs who have Civ4 then get that. Otherwise, I think it won't be difficult to find multiplayer matches on the PS3 version. Between GAF and here, I bet we could get a regular league/tournament going... I'll be picking up the game tomorrow.

RTS, or anything like RTS on PC is always better than on console. The cold hard truth. And civ 4 is probably quite a lot cheaper.
Civ Rev is made with new gamers to the series in mind as the experience is overly simplified in comparison, but you could also argue it being due to the controller instead of a mouse/keyboard. From what i played of the demo, it works pretty well and the experience is still very fun, however even if it is your first time, i say go find yourself a copy of Civ III, should be pretty cheap now with the 3 expansions too, and then go on to IV if you like it and just skip Rev. Rev is good, the PC games are just better.

It's not real time though, it's turn-based so no system really has an advantage in that regard.

Civ 4 sucks. So much fucking micromanagement + two fucking hours to get 3 units to go to an enemy city. So much wasted time on stupid micromanagement shit that the computer sould be doing for me automatically.
You shold get Civ Rev instead. All those stupid shit are handle for you automatically so that you can focus on the real fun: Killing Your Enemies and Conquoring the fucking World.

Except...most people would say those are the reasons they would pick Civ4 over Civ Rev....
That is, for the people that would pick Civ4 over Civ Rev.

I don't think Red_Eyes understands the main reason of playing Civ :/ lol
Without all the micro-management (which btw you cans set for the computer to handle if you want), it's just moving your army around which is not that in depth for many people.
Not to mention there are many ways to win in Civ that are fun.
Racing to build a space shuttle through getting many parts was one of the most exciting games I had in Civ4.

I didn't play and of the PC Civ games, but after playing the PS3 demo I was hooked, so I had to pick it up today. Then when I got home my roommate had already bought it and was playing it, so I'm returning mine and I basically get to play an awesome game for free. Anyway, I would say pick up the PS3 version, it's a lot of fun. Hopefully they patch it and enable trophy support, that would be cool.
Damn but the games are short i finished mine in 2 hours on the easy difficulty. I hope the timeline goes by a little slower on the harder difficulties cause i wasnt even close to building half the stuff for my best city by the 1900 hundreds. A bit too stream lined for my liking. I hope you can change stuff in the settings to extend a games life.

I'll get Revolution too, when the price hits 30€ or so... I always loved the Civ games (I regularly play Free Civ :D), even back in the Amiga times.

I prefer Civ4 for the most part.
how dows online work in these games? do you start a civ from scratch or do they give you something halfway? I ask because if it is the first, it seems it would take a long time to finish an online multiplayer match that way.

Again, it depends on which. Civ 4 games are traditional Civ which means they are notorious for long seemingly endless sessions. Civ Rev is supposed to be far more social-life friendly. It's basically Monopoly versus Life.

Civ4 - Play for days and game isn't finish yet. Civ Rev - Several hours only, unless you make it longer.
