So I had F@H running all night and it was running now. I go to check the team stats with the ps3 and the screen goes black. Now the ps3 will not shut off or anything. What do I do?

Should I just unplug the console or what should I do in this situation?

hit the hard power switch in the back then turn it back on.

yeah, it can hang up sometimes like that. I normally just hold down the power button until it beeps, or if it won't then just do what lali said.

I doubt you want to hear this now, but if you plan to let the PS3 run for extended periods of time ensure it's in a well ventilated area to prevent overheating... One easy way to know if the system is getting too hot is the cooling fan; it will get pretty loud if the system is overheating.

I have it in a very well ventilated area, have fans running int he room too with a/c so it stays a cool temperature in here. The PS3 is quiet, never gets loud. I will do the switch on the back though.

I'm fairly certain that running F@H all the time created the graphics errors I had in this (http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=85700&highlight=Assassin%27s+Creed+glitches) thread. Since I've stopped running folding, my refurb unit has had maybe half the hangups the old one did (usually when using the browser). All this to say that I wouldn't be surprised if running Folding for extended periods of time increases the likelihood of GPU errors (perhaps a black screen is one?)...

That would suck if so because I have only done a total of 3 MU's on my ps3 and its only a month old.

I jsut started to do the folding at home, but if it's bad for me to leave my PS3 on when I'm not home, then I'm not going to do that anymore.

I don't think they really want you guys to run the thing like that anyhow. It's clearly pushing the console to do so.

I highly doubt F@H can cause any permanent damage to the RSX or CELL apart from the effects of overheating. I folded pretty much 24x7 for the past year during very hot days 40C+ with no problems. Although, a friend's PS3 got the yellow light of death when folding during a hot week with his PS3 in direct sunlight - don't try that at home kids:)

I've heard of some overheating issues with the PS3 when running folding, and since my room is always like a sauna, I really never run it.

I'd say you shouldn't leave it on too much while running folding. Perhaps a folding session for like an hour while you're watching TV or something would be better than leaving it on for long times folding.

Well yesterday once my system froze up while in F@H, though I had just started it, this was when i first set it up. I went to check some of the features and it froze on the website it brings up. That time though it shut down when i pressed the button.

use the autoshut down with F@H at night. it will finsh 1 unit than turn off giving your controllers time to charge too!

Are you back up and running yet? Wasn't sure if that was ever established...

one should check if it is updated/downloading a finished/new WU. if your system hangs up for any reason, keep pressing the power button. it will force-shut-down after about 10 seconds or so.
as with any electronic device, do NOT shut it off and restart it immediately. wait for a minute or so.

I never heard or had problems running folding. I once folded for one and a half months straight. during that time I had three power shortages in my area and I was worried my PS3 would get fried or die. after the power got back, I immediately start to fold again. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. it is just a program. PS3 has excellent cooling and hardware design. do whatever you want with it. it won't give in. hell, I think I'll take it into the bath with me and have some quality one on one time. we can fold all night together baby!

that is also a great solution for those not comfortable leaving their system on or are leaving their house for a few days and are worried about the PS3 being on all the time. I think you can even chose more than 1 unit to shut off after, but I haven't experimented with that feature. I just leave it to fold till i want to do something else with the machine or forget to make it fold for a while.

Yep back up and running. Just switched it off on the back and back on.

I tried holding the power button down to see if it would shut off after a while, it never did. It is working now though just fine.

Well, earlier F@H was VERY crash prone... especially when shutting it off, the PS3 would regularly reset my PS3 (and many others, so I've read), but no harm was done...

maybe it was a mere and simple system crash... If your system now works, you shouldn't worry, at least for now!

yeah, i've ran f@h almost non stop for a year now with no problems. An occasional crash, but that's all. it isn't going to fry your ps3.
