Warhawk v1.4 Update “Free Gameplay Modes!!”

+ Posted by Dylan Jobe // Game Director, Warhawk

As the storm of E3 approaches, so does our next big update for Warhawk and with it comes 2 entirely new gameplay modes for every map, including the Booster Packs – and these new gameplay modes are completely FREE!

Before I get into the meaty list of updates, let me start off by saying that Warhawk v1.4 will have its global simultaneous release very, very soon…how soon you ask?

In just about 48 hours — July 16th at 10:00 GMT (that’s 3am Pacific)

When we started designing the new modes, we looked at play styles could freshen up the Warhawk play experience. After all, Warhawk is now almost a year old :-) And after a few months of development and play testing, we’re ready to rollout 2 new gameplay modes that the team and I are incredibly happy with: Hero and Collection.
New Gameplay Mode “Hero”

This is a team-based game mode in which one member of each team is randomly selected to be their team’s Epic Hero. Players score points for their team by killing the enemy Hero or by killing enemies while they’re the Hero. The team that reaches the score limit first (or has the most points when time runs out) wins the game.

Hero_1
Really what it all boils down to is a huge battle between 2 armies that are being lead by 2 Epic Heroes!

While you’re the Hero, you get some pretty incredible buffs…the mode’s called Hero after all so you’ve gotta be tough!

You get crazy high damage resistance which is like having 500% health. All of your weapons do twice the damage. And the armor-piercing values for your weapons are increased so that some weapons that normally can’t hurt vehicles like Tanks and Turrets, now can!

Hero_2_L
Now you aren’t the Hero for the entire game. Once you are selected as the Hero, you have a limited amount of time to go on your berserker-blitz-rampage-of-carnage-awesomeness. See the shots above for the Hero meter in the upper left-hand corner. Also note the crazy visuals that are rendered when you’re the Hero. You glow your team color, you emit light the same color as your team, you growl a scary sound that strikes fear in you’re your foes, and of course, energy sparks…must….have…energy sparks!!!

Scoring is simple: If a Hero kills a player, he scores 1 point for his team. If a normal player, or more commonly, a group of players, kills the Hero, 1 point is granted for the team. If a Hero kills the other enemy Hero, then 2 points are scored for the team.

Hero_3
Oh…but here’s the downside for the Hero…everyone is gunning for you! If you die, then a new Hero on you team is given the chance for Epic Hero Greatness!!!

Did I mention that Heroes are always displayed on the mini-map!?!?…and with a star no less!

Simply stated…this mode is wicked intense!
New Gameplay Mode “Collection”

This new gameplay mode is like multi-flag CTF. There are 4 energy cores scattered around the map, generally positioned in the center or between the 2 team’s main bases. Each team has a Reactor where Energy Cores are taken to score points.

Col_1
In the screen shot above you can see 2 Energy Cores positioned on a Eucadian bridge. Bringing these Cores back to your team’s reactor will score points for your team…and you can carry more than 1 Core at a time.

The scoring system is progressive, so if you score just 1 Core, your team gets just 1 point. 2 Cores will score 3 points. 3 Cores are good for 6 points…and if you manage to work as a team and bring all 4 Cores back to the Reactor at once, then your team scores a whopping 10 points!

Col_2
As you can see in the screenshot below, the Cores are displayed on your character and the more you are carrying, the more you see whirling and orbiting around you. You’ll also see them on the mini-map as pulsing energy symbols. The score is displayed in the upper right corner as usual, but there is a new display there for Collection mode. It’s the little yellow number that shows you how many Cores your team currently is currently carrying. This ends up being critical for knowing where your focus should be; Offense or Defense.

Col_3_L
Collection mode is fun as &#@%! and really helps promote teamwork and yield some truly fantastic risk-vs-reward moments!…and you can press the TRIANGLE button to throw the Cores you are carrying! Passing Cores among your team is “super-effective” :-)

So that’s a quick run down of the new modes and we can’t wait to have our player around the world start playing 2 completely new ways to enjoy the fast-paced world of Warhawk!

Hmmm…what should I cover next?
Quick-Join:

While we were glad to provide players with very specific control of which games they join or host via our global server list, we wanted to provide an easier way for new and veteran players to get into their favorite games more quickly and easily….thus the new ‘Quick-Join’ feature.

QuickJoin
Basically what this new feature does, and I imagine many of you have already figured it out, is automatically scan the server-list behind the scenes, pick a good game for you based on your connection, latency, current filter settings, etc. This all happens in just a few seconds.

This way, if you like playing CTF games *only* in base retail levels with no booster packs, you can set your filters and all you ever have to do from there on out is click ‘Quick-Join’. The ‘Quick-Join’ button honors *all* of your filters so you can really customize Warhawk’s automatic server selection.

If you are brand new to the PSN or to Warhawk you’ll have to play at least one ranked game the traditional server-list way, so that the servers can collect some stats before ‘Quick Join’ will work well for you. After that, you’ll be ready for hot, 1-click, automated server selection action! For those players you have already played Warhawk and the servers already have your stats, you’ll be good to go as soon as the patch is released.
Mini-Map Update:

For game modes like CTF, and the newly added Collection mode, we really need to clarify where you need to take the flag or core – we had received complaints that players could get confused as to where they needed to go. Warhawk now draws a much more prominent ring at the location where you need to return the flag or core. Additionally, the mini-map renders an animated green line that connects your ‘blip’ to the return location.

Mini-Map_S
Rank & Award Updates:

Now we know this is a sensitive subject as it relates to how easy, or in our case, how hard it is to rank up, unlock some of the badges and be awarded any of the elite medals. With that said, we have made some changes to make ranking up a bit easier. Here’s a list of what we changed for the Medals and Badges:

* “Capture the Flag” Medal previously required 500 total captures, now it requires 250.
* “Capture the Flag” Medal previously required 5 captures IAR (In A Round) and now requires 2.
* “Capture the Flag” Medal still requires 500 flag saves.
* “Distinguished Air Combat” Medal previously required 10K total air-to-air kills and now requires 5K kills.
* “Distinguished Air Combat” Medal previously required 20 minutes IAR of flight time and now it requires 10 minutes.
* “Master Teamwork” Badge previously required 75 team points IAR and now requires 60 points.
* “Master Teamwork” Badge still requires 2K total team points
* “Warhawk Teamwork” Badge still requires 2K total team points
* “Warhawk Teamwork” Badge previously required 150 team points IAR and now requires 100 points.

We have also loosened the requirements, specifically point requirements, for some of the officer ranks. The changes to the point requirements for rank advancement are:

* “Major” previously was 150K now its 110K points.
* “Air Marshal” previously required 170K now its 130K points
* “Command Marshal” previously required 190K now its 155K points.
* “Lt. Colonel” previously required 210K now its 180K points.
* “Colonel” previously required 230K now its 210K points.
* “Brigadier General” previously required 250K now its 240K points.

Now we realize that there are many players who have logged several hundreds of gameplay hours – the team and I greatly appreciate your dedication to our game and it’s the dedication of our loyal fan base that helped make the development of these free game modes an easy decision!
TOW Missile:

The respawn rate modifier based on player count has been modified to take a longer period of time so that TOW missiles do not respawn as quickly in large player-count games.
Minimum Rank Server Option:

Warhawk official and player-hosted servers now support a MINIMUM rank along with the previously existing MAX rank.

Min_Rank
Respawn Selection Hint:

I know it may sound odd to some of you avid Warhawk players but we actually noticed that there were a number of new players that didn’t realize that you could select a different spawn point when you died. This is primarily for new Warhawk players and this respawn hint is disabled if you have “Hints Display” turned OFF in your options.

Spawn
Updates for Home Game Launching:

Now players that are launching/connecting to Warhawk games from Home can designate which team they will be assigned to before the server is started. Warhawk’s Support of Home Game Launching now also supports the new Hero and Collection gameplay modes.
Afterburner Flight to Hover Transition:

Previously, if you were flying the Warhawk (or Nemesis) with the afterburners engaged, you were disallowed from transitioning into hover mode. While this may have been a bit more realistic, Warhawk is more about fun than realism and not being able to transition into hover when you want to need to is frustrating! So now, you can switch to hover mode even if your afterburner is engaged.
Team Deathmatch Scoring:

The scoring system for Team Deathmatch previously counted base captures towards the team kill count/score. This is no longer the case and now *only* counts kills…as you would expect Team Deathmatch to do :-)
New “Winning Team” Ribbon:

In an attempt to further promote teamwork, Warhawk now awards a new ribbon to every member of the winning team. With this “Winning Team” ribbon, each player also is awarded an additional 50 bonus points.

Rib_1
Kick-Idle Player Server Option:

Warhawk now allows players to set an option on their own servers (player or dedicated) that will auto-kick idle players. Warhawk also now detects players purposely not respawning via the respawn exploit and will consider them idle as well.

So that’s a pretty good summary of the Warhawk v1.4 Update that’s going to be released world-wide on July 16th at 3am Pacific time (10:00 GMT). We really hope you like all the new updates ‘cause I sure know we had a great time making them for all of you!!! And FREE content is always a good thing!!!

Oh yeah…let me take a minute to clarify some stuff about our upcoming Warhawk v1.5 Update and our new Trophy support.

So, while I have just finished writing what is probably *way* too long of a blog post regarding the v1.4 Update…I need to talk about the v1.5 Update, specifically the Trophies. Here’s a quick breakdown of the 56 Warhawk Trophies:

There are 10 trophies based on current stats, ranks and awards and these 10 *ARE* retroactive. This is largely due to the fact that we have this data stored on our global Warhawk Server Cluster. There are 34 other Trophies that are entirely new ‘goals’ and should provide players with plenty of new challenges. And yes, Operation: Omega Dawn, Operation: Broken Mirror, and possibly a new something have new Trophies as well. Each booster pack has an additional 4 unique Trophies.

To earn the Warhawk Platinum Trophy, all you have to do is unlock the base game’s 44 Trophies…you do *NOT* have to buy any DLC to unlock the Platinum Warhawk Trophy. Forcing players to buy our DLC would be super-craptastic and completely unacceptable.

….hmmm, that’s about it for now. The Warhawk v1.4 Update is right around the corner!!

As always, Rock on!

Nice... Hero Mode sounds interesting and the other one too... but 50 points for the "winning team" medal is a bit much, isn't it? I mean, I get like ~100 points a round, when I am in a good mood...

NICE! I was hoping for some more gameplay modes, and hero sounds like it'll alleviate the problem of being dropped into a game where one side is already well into the process of buttraping the other.

Why man?
It made for easy points and some people would go around capturing points not adding to team but their own points only, that was annoying so glad they fixed that.

I am so HYPED on this update, we love you Warhawk team!
I'm so glad I bought each pack, I kinda feel bad about buying OmegaPack now and then since it's hardly used but then free updates make me feel ok about them :p

Looking forward to Hero (the other one didn't catch my interest)!

HOLY CRAP!!! Now that's what I call an update!

There were so many things in there that really, really annoyed me that were fixed starting with that freakin TOW missle. You have no idea how aggravating this thing could be when you are on a team with a large number of newbies that don't really know the game that well, and therefore, unable to provide the assistance you would hope from them, as the enter team awaits their fate every single second, which is how it feels sometimes, before a nuke hits your only spawning point.

Having said that, since Warhawk's first release globally, it has yet to lose its edge on replay value, IMO. So you can only imagine how often I still play it over my other titles. :)

The Omega Factory stage is a bit too large and mainly confusing at times, but I do enjoy the dropship on the retro stages, though. But I must admit, to no least, that I love the APC far more on just about any stage for the simple fact that its more handy in combat.

Yeah, APC is the king :)
Best vehicle in game! (other than Tank, i just love driving around shooting stuff with tanks).

APC IS good unless your team-mates are morons.
At spawn when someone jumps into a APC and jets off.....I'm like "um dude I think you missed the point of having an APC...."

I usually just wait until at least 2 people are on, much better at pwning especially if they have rocket launchers :devious:

Wow I finally started to play Warhawk again this Saturday and remembered why I stopped. I think I need some Warhawk buddies to appreciate the game more. So this is an official plea can some of you guys add me so I can love this game more?

I find I can deal with the smaller maps with a few people but when it gets to bigger ones everyone runs in a different direction and I'm left to run around looking for the odd kill.

Anyway I have both booster packs great game but not easy for a newb to pick up.

“Does anyone know what this hidden link connected with?”

If you put this hint together with the 3 colored squares, it points to the icarus mothership. Someone figured out that the ascii values (or something like this) for the colors of the squares are WAX, SUN, DIE. This refers to the myth of icarus where icarus put FEATHERS on himself with wax so he could fly. But he flew to close to the sun, the wax melted and he died. Now in the original warhawk, people say the motherships were called icarus motherships. After these 2 hints, there’s no doubt in my mind the boosterpack has something to do with the icarus mothership. Just no one knows exactly how they will implement it.

Sony have announced that, as part of Warhawk's 1.5 update, over 50 trophies will be introduced into the game, and they're being offered for achievements as diverse as hosting a game for four hours, playing a "perfect deathmatch" (come 1st, no deaths) and shooting down aircraft with a tank. The update will also introduce "custom music tracks from the Home Menu", new paint schemes and insignia and a range of tutorial missions to help new players out before jumping online. It'll be released on August 27.I'll change the thread title.

Something interesting has just occured to me. Since I've been playing Warhawk, I don't think I ever noticed any soundtrack playing in the background from the developer.

While I am on the subject of soundtracks, I must also add that the music Warhawk does have has never been a problem, IMO. Motor Storm, however, is a different story. This title is badly in need of custom soundtracks while Blast Factor needs one all together.

In a case like this, it's best to keep your distance. So find a game full of rookies, jump in a plane and nuke, lightning strike and bomb the hell out of them. Also, make sure you have a wrench on hand for quick fixes and a stealth power-up loaded to the max to keep them from locking onto you.

Warhawk Update to Feature Offline Modes
Posted by Wombat on 08/05 at 08:26 AM

When I read this on Kotaku one bit jumped out at me that I think needs some exploration. You see, the piece gives some details about the 1.5 patch for Warhawk. They mention something’s that are obvious, like trophies and custom soundtracks and some fun things like, new paint and insignia schemes. Here’s what I like, the brief mention of offline tutorials. I want to know how robust this new offline mode is. Are talking a few quick challenges? How about the ability to play against bots? Remember Bots?

There was once a time when all multiplayer games let you play alone with bots. It was great for learning maps and how to use weapons. This way when you went online you didn’t play like an idiot when you hit a new map for the first time. These days games are too cool, or developers are too lazy to add bots to their games, so they are a thing of the past. I don’t know what the new mode in Warhawk is, but at least I won’t have to wait too long to find out. Update 1.5 is set to come out this month.

jetpacks-revealed-in-warhawk-trophies

by Patrick Steen on August 6, 2008 at 3:52 pm

That’s right, Warhawk is getting trophies. Oh, you knew that? Well it’s getting much more than that. The next downloadable pack will bring jetpacks.

http://www.ripten.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/warhawk-rocket-pack2.jpg

On the 27th August, Warhawk will be patched up to v1.5, not only bringing 56 trophies but also tutorials to train new players and the ability to create custom soundtracks.

The trophies are an amalgamation of original accomplishments, where some will be retroactively rewarded. These contain trophies to encourage participating in the community, those specific to certain game modes, vehicle trophies, and weapon trophies. There’ll also be a collection for each map pack, including the third untitled and unannounced pack (white feather?). Here’s a small selection of what to expect:

Secret Daredevil – Get 100 feet off the ground in a ground vehicle. Does not count if the vehicle is being carried by a Dropship.
Invincible -- While on foot, take at least 250 damage within 10 seconds without dying.
Porcupine – Destroy an enemy Warhawk with the APC’s E-POD shield.
Taxi Driver – Help a teammate capture the flag (in CTF) or cogs (in Collection) by transporting him back to the base, using any vehicle.

The full selection can be found at this link. Many of the specific trophies are unconfirmed, but some have already been mentioned by Sony. We have little doubt that such a lengthy and detailed list is accurate - who would have the time to make it up?

If you’re particularly savvy, you should notice descriptions referring to jetpacks, wearable by individual players who can still use their weapons mid-flight:

Aerial Ballet – While flying a jetpack, kill an enemy (who is also flying a jetpack) with any weapon other than the Rocket Launcher.
Are You Aim-Botting? — Snipe an enemy who is flying a jetpack.
That Was Some Bug – Kill an enemy who is flying a jetpack by hitting him with any vehicle or aircraft.

There is also mention of a new map, called Tau Crater, which will feature a “salvage crane.” Don’t tell anyone, but we expect the pack to release close to the release of the patch. The game that never stops giving will give us a whole lot more on August 27th. Scratch the date into your Warhawk, soldiers.

That’s right, Warhawk is getting trophies. Oh, you knew that? Well it’s getting much more than that. The next downloadable pack will bring jetpacks.

It's official, warhawk is now the perfect game

08-07-2008, 01:34 AM
I don't think the jetpack and trophies will be together. I can see the new map with the jetpack considering thats the trend, new map + vehicle. Also the hidden clue on the last blog post was a picture of a white feather, feathers float... ooor one can argue the come from wings which allow you to fly. I predict limited flight with an afterburner-esque recharge bar which will let you float down levels on the new canyon map.

My 2 cents....

ugh, guess i was wrong.

i had read that something about a hint that dylan had given that was a series of colors and the hex values of the colors spelled out something which was the name of the massive airships in WH1. and that it was also tied in with the feather. i know i read that, but after googling it...

the code spells WaxsunDie. The way I came to this is to determine the RGB hex values for each of the color squares. These are:
square1 = 57:61:78
square2 = 73:75:6E
square3 = 44:69:65
If we convert these to ASCII, we get:
Wax
sun
Die

does sound like jetpacks. well, damn. hopefully it won't suck.

-rededit-
ah, the name of the airships in WH1 were Icarus.

OMG! Is this the sweetest thing or what? :worthy::buldge::buldge::worthy:

In our ever-changing world, a world where Brett Favre is now a Jet, things can happen very quickly! So it should be expected that another FREE Warhawk Update be released with equal quickness! :-)

OMG…he’s a Jet…I still can’t get over it but, whatever.

We just released our v1.4 Update a month ago and we’re ready to upgrade our players to the latest version–Warhawk v1.5 which is tentatively scheduled for release on August 27th. We’re currently in the final phase of global Sony certification testing and all is looking good so far!

Custom In-Game Music

This feature was asked for by a bazillion players! Now players can use the XMB music player to play their own custom music. Warhawk will also detect if you are using the XMB player and automatically disable the in-game Warhawk music. Convenience for the win!

XMB Trophies

I have talked about this several times before so this is by no means new-news…especially with the recent leak of our full trophy list – gotta love the internets. BTW, the team and I are really flattered that someone would risk their job to leak confidential info about our game — Makes us feel good in a weird kinda way.

Anyhoo….

There are 56 trophies included in the Warhawk v1.5 Update. These also include trophies for the booster packs, some of the trophies are, or rather *were*, hidden and some are retroactive based on your server-side stats. Here are just a few of the trophies that are included.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3008/2754162978_f227fd7ed9.jpg?v=0

Training Tutorials

As more and more people join the Warhawk community, we are seeing an even greater difference between skill-levels than ever before. New Warhawk players had to go online in order to learn the game and, invariably, they would encounter enemy players that were, shall we say, not too kind to newbies :) This made it really hard for players to learn the ropes, get familiar with the controls, weapons, etc.

So…The new v1.5 Update includes 4 very simple tutorials that can be played off-line. Each one focuses on the core principals of each of the 3 modes of gameplay: Infantry, Ground Vehicles and Aircraft. Now these tutorials are very, very simple and It wouldn’t surprise me if some of our more hardcore players find them way too pedestrian. But we’re looking to help the *new* player, a player that may not be that familiar with Warhawk or the shooter genre. These tutorials are an invaluable help to a newbie!!!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3134/2753332317_5d29b62e89.jpg

After completing each of the 3 core tutorials a trophy is unlocked – a nice incentive for new players and, well…all you avid Warhawk players can think of them as “easy-money”.

The forth training tutorial, “Flight Practice” is intended to be replayed over and over again, and help players get familiar with the most rewarding, and most challenging of the 3 gameplay modes: Piloting Aircraft!

In this one, you are tasked with destroying as many attack drones as possible in 3 minutes. These simple, hovering turrets fire swarm missiles at you as you practice flying and “scrubbing” missiles. This tutorial is a huge help for new players by giving them a safe, offline way to practice their piloting skills.

Now I know that there are many players out there that often engage in 1v1 dogfights for fun and bragging rights. And while these tutorials are way, way below your skill-level, you may find it fun to do “speed-runs” and compare kill counts.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3273/2754162378_fab27ccc9e.jpg

Retract Clan Invites

Another feature that players, or more specifically, clan-leaders have asked for, is the ability to retract a clan invite that they have sent to a player. For whatever reason, that player maybe never responded to the invite, was being a…a…what’s a blog-safe term that I won’t get in trouble for using??? How about “tool”, yes I’ll use the term tool. So if a player is being a tool and just camping on your invite…you can pull it back. This is important to clan admins because there is a fixed number of clan invites (64) that an admin can have pending at any one time.

New Paint Schemes & Insignias

Awhile ago you all may recall that we held a competition in the USA where players could submit their own Warhawk and Nemesis paint schemes. We selected the 20 best ones and integrated them with the v1.3 update. Well, we held another competition but this time for our players in Europe. We got some great submissions for paint schemes and insignias, and we’re glad to show you all the winners! All of these, the 20 new paint schemes and 50 new insignias are included in the v1.5 update and of course they are free as are all of our updates.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3291/2753331869_fbb9142b19.jpg

GGL Ceremonial Blades

The GGL recently held a Warhawk tournament and you probably saw the post from our Sr. Producer at SCEA, Harvard Bonin. Below is an image of the new GGL-Ceremonial Knife that participants in the GGL tournament will receive automatically when the v1.5 update is released. You don’t have to do anything to enable it…the global Warhawk server knows if you were in the tournament and will auto-grant you the award.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3202/2753319441_978de16587.jpg

For you members ARMED^ASSASSIN’s, the next time you player after the v1.5 update is released, your infantry combat blade will be replaced by the Champion’s Blade (seen below) and you’ll be the only players on the planet with this item!

What’s more fun than a Trophy that you can beat someone with? – I submit…NOTHING :)

“Rookie” Server Color-Coding

We also have added an attractive green color to all official “rookie” server names in the server list. Players that are eligible to play on rookie servers will find these servers sorted to the top of the list automagically for easy selection.

To recap the color coding, Blue servers are official Sony hosted servers, Yellow servers are games launched from HOME, and Green servers are reserved for “rookies”.

We have also fixed the exploit that allowed some players to host unlimited flag capture games, get underneath and into the battlefield and act like….like tools. We also fixed the issue with Quick Join that required you to have stats previously posted in order for it to work properly, and a few other items…ohh yeah, and the 1-minute farming of the Winning Team Ribbon has been fixed. Oh…and one more thing, we are going to be rolling-out version checking on the EULA and announcements so if you have already seen them and they haven’t changed, Warhawk will automatically bypass those screens for you.

Some of you may have read some rumors about our next Booster Pack…I can neither confirm nor deny anything…at least for right now :) Keep your eyes peeled for an update here on the blog and the media coverage at Leipzig which is right around the corner!!!

Last hint…and this is an easy one:

With one of these equipped, a soldier can escape quickly…even bail out if needed!

As always – Rock on!

You pack it before going in the warhawk (or it becomes one of the warhawk weapons) and it enables you to press Square and get out of the warhawk at anytime? And then slowly descend to safety.
I'm thinking that's how it'll work and I'm hoping that's the case.

It'll be fun to try and catch the guys who ejected with your machine gun.

Warhawk: Operation: Fallen Star expansion pack official details

Posted Aug 20th 2008 3:30PM by Andrew Yoon
Filed under: Videos and Screenshots, PlayStation Network, e-Distribution Games

The third expansion pack for the PSN-exclusive Warhawk is coming by month's end. Operation Fallen Star introduces Tau Crater, a remote, forested level that is the site of a crashed Chernovan warship containing experimental technology. This new pack adds the Infrantry Jetpack and ten new battlefields, most likely variations of the Tau Crater level. Of course, a free summer update will add a few new features, not forgetting Trophies.

Massive content updates cost time and money to make, so...no not likely, unless they're already making dividends back and feel generous, which isn't out of the question, but it'll usually be free in the first place, not after a while.

Man... I saw the trailer just now... and I think, the "rocket pack" seems to be addon only... that SUCKS...

The APC and the flying spaghetti monsters are nice n all, but most servers (the blue ones) do not use them, so they are basically useless... the same fate will come to the rocket pack... which sucks, as it is a REALLY cool addon, especially since everyone can use it, not only people who decide to drive or fly. I will still likely pick up the addon, but I doubt that it will be played THAT much

This is why I would like to have a chain gun as a standard, much like the bio mines. That way all the servers will support it.

Regarding the jet packs, I was a little concerned as to whether they would let you turn them on and off or not when waring them. From the likes of the video, it appears they do. That is awesome and very useful in a case like mine!

for a while after the last update, i only ever hd 2-3 official servers total. cause of the new minimum/max rank. i complained on the forum and so did some others, and they fixed that. but never any servers with those modes/stage. i actually see omega factory more often now than whatever the other was. glacier something.

There's a dedicated server I play on all the time, which is usually full, that rotates all the booster pack maps in capture the flag. Depending on when you join, you may enter during the APC rotation. It'll take you through all of the levels with the APC and then it'll switch to the Dropship and do the same. The cap allows Recruit all the way up to General to jump into this server.

There is another server that does the same for CTF but without the booster packs.

Others I play on are usually capped at my rank and higher.

What you need to do is adjust your filter system to recognize servers that are in progress/have activity in them so that you don't have to go sifting through every single dedicated server to find a game going. From there, you can choose the ones you like the most and save them to your favorites for easy access next time. I have yet to find a Collections server that isn't packed to the max. I saw a few Hero servers also.

Jetpacks are a part of the expansion and will therefore cost you.

I got to thinking about something that could create an equilibrium between ground troops and warhawks or tanks relatively well the other day, and I must say that it made a lot of sense and appears VERY effective even for the recruits but not to the point where it could be abused and grant that user any real advantage.

Ok, usually when a zone, base, or flag is being reclaimed, a trooper must either exit their plane (completely exposing their self) or set patiently in their vehicle until one of the above is captured. At about this time, an enemy warhawk(s) usually arrives on the scene, depending on where you are, emptying most of their inventory onto you with you having no real defense effective enough to fight them back - especially since your vehicle and yourself is usually too damaged by then. So your options at this point are normally straight forward: try to find shelter or commit suicide since trying to score a kill is obviously about a 10% chance. For this reason and this reason alone is why warhawkers aren't afraid to approach and face off with a ground trooper, and it's another reason spawning areas can be locked-up very quickly to a point where a trooper can't obtain a weapon effective enough to somewhat control the situation.

Tanks are just as bad when a spawning area only has a machine or mounted gun, a sniper rifle, some grenades, and a jeep. On the other side of the road you have a few tanks headed your way. Here's another case where the battle is lopsided - especially when you probably won't even have a vehicle - let alone enough of them, to get you and your team from point A to point B.

A solution I believe would greatly benefit this game is an electric magnetic pulse hand gun (EMP) that shot grenades that could either be detonated at will or on contact of the target, which creates an explosion wide enough to temporarily shut down any mechanical object, given that an enemy intruder is inside, within the range of the blast. I'd imagine a blast covering a distance at about the range of an air mine or slightly larger when a warhawk crosses its path. So if a warhawk is over the water, it could very well plummet into it, pilot and all if caught in the blast. If over land, the pilot or driver of any vehicle still has a chance to continue fighting or fleeing but without their vehicle since it is temporarily disabled. For instance, those in tanks can remain in the tank and peek out through the top, but the cannon nor the tank itself is in service until the EMP blast wears off. Flag carriers are no different if they were looking to make a quick escape in a jeep. Rocket turrets are another, and the list goes on and on.

What this basically does is force the opposite team to work harder to achieve a set mission rather than cheesing their way to victory by camping out in fixtures or vehicles as spawning troops with a very limited, non-effective supply of weapons attempt to fight back. This can also provide spawning troops with transportation from the opposite team (fully loaded warhawks possibly) if they manage to defeat those members in battle before they can make it back to their vehicles once the EMP has worn off.

Hrama
08-22-2008, 08:29 PM
Yeah, Domination, I like that idea a lot. I mean, just go into the Northern Bridge in Eucadia and play a capture the flag game... usually, the team that wins is the first one to get into their warhawks and spawn-camp the other teams's. I mean, you have little to no chance if you're not in a warhawk of doing anything without being blown to bits by a tow missile or have the vehicle you're running toward get hit by a fully charged lightning cannon. Tanks, of course fair better in these situations, but as a troop, it's instant death to walk out from beneath a building's precious overhang. That EMP idea could actually be workable Domination as a viable solution.

It's never too late: Warhawk demo may be in the works

Posted Aug 25th 2008 11:00PM by Andrew Yoon
Filed under: e-Distribution Games

The team at Incognito has been expanding the Warhawk universe in quite a number of ways, with three expansion packs, various free patches and tutorials for beginner players. While the Warhawk community seems rather healthy, it appears that Incognito is going to go another step further: it looks to be making a downloadable demo available in the future. An impromptu Q&A developed on the PlayStation.blog, with one reader asking Dylan Jobe about the possibilitiy of a demo. "What about a demo of sorts? A game like this won't ever see my purchase if I can't even try it out."

To that, Jobe responds: "We're on it." Considering this is an online-only title, how would a Warhawk demo even work? Would there simply be a server dedicated to demo-only players? Or will, it be a time-limited offering? Guess we'll find out whenever Warhawk's better-late-than-never demo appears.

Zuh? WHY WOULD ANYBODY NEED A DEMO FOR WARHAWK? Shit's $30 now, it's not you'd be out a grip of cash if you bought it and didn't like it. And unless you're Japanese and have no need of 3rd person online only action games, then this is the perfect purchase.

here’s my concern with the jetpacks:
i hate people that camp a whole match with an RPG, shooting at planes for 30 minutes. pisses me off. so i wonder how easy/hard is it to kill someone in a jetpack, from a warhawk. if they’re on the ground, i can always get them with a cluster-bomb, lightening-gun, close-up homing missle, or if need-be, a TOW.
i know you can't lock on to them from a WH, and running into them seems like it would be ahrd, yet they can target you with an RPG (right?). doesn't seem fair.

LaLiLuLeLo
08-27-2008, 02:37 AM
Well, you might be able to lock onto them with a missile considering they've got a jetpack on, which emits exhaust and heat. We'll see. Incog has had their shit together so far with little touches like that, so don't be sour just yet.

I'm thinking running into them will be pretty easy. The warhawks maneuver so much better than tanks--I'm hoping to get that "bug on the windshield" trophy pretty fast. I also suspect turning 360 degrees will be slow with the jetpack, so hopefully straffing behind them with a machine gun will work okay. I worried the hovercraft would dominate the warhawks, too, but it's slow enough that us (thinking of gnznroses here) skilled pilots can dance around it okay. Guess we'll find out Thursday. I doubt I'll get much playtime in until Friday, though...

Any word on what time the patch will hit tomorrow? It'd be great if it was midnight tonight.

they've said you can't lock on to a jetpack.

i'm not afraid that jetpacks will dominate warhawks, just that RPG campers, hovering in place, dodging you and always with a clear shot, will be far more annoying.

so far they've done an exceptional job of keeping the game superbly balanced, but there is no game yet able to balance out the plague that is spawn-camping. This is why getting into a game midway where one team is elbow-deep in raping the other will always be NEGATIVE FUN.

I've never thought spawn-camping was so bad in Warhawk. Sure, there are times when you're losing and you're going to lose, but I've always been able to get away from spawn points, usually in a Warhawk, long enough to feel productive (capture a spawn point to relieve the camping, snag some mines and sabotage the enemy base, reach a tow missile, etc). If I'm tops on my team in points, I figure that was an okay round, even if the team sucked. There wasn't much more I could do in that situation. There's also some implicit pleasure in hearing the other team chatting about targetting you the next round...

At least it's not like most games where you're stuck on the ground and spawn camping is made worse by restricted movement (corridors/hallways). Maybe once or twice I've run across a team of 4 expert fliers who are communicating well so that I just have no chance of evading them, but that's pretty rare. There are plenty of better pilots than me out there, but I rarely feel "dominated" or "impossibly over-matched." The worst for me is when all the planes are gone/taken/mined. Then I start to get frustrated being grounded, since I'm not so great a ground player. I'd much rather lose a round zipping around the map, being active, than win one running around on foot while my teammates dominate the skies... Tanks feel really slow, and I always end up running over a mine or having to bail from a jeep. Here's to hoping jetpacks give one more escape route for players frustrated by sucky teammates...

sometimes the air is so dominated that i do give up and stay on the ground. sometimes even camping at a turret or rpg. but there's people who do that for a whole game just for no reason. those are the ones who piss me off. not as bad as someone on eucadia (or other maps) hiding in a tank, aimed right at the flag. (usually they stay out of the tank until they need to hop in and shoot, so they don't show on radar). that's just cheap. dittor for people hiding with an rpg aimed at the flag. i just can't stand people who play like pussies like that.

frosty
08-27-2008, 09:25 PM
that isn't cheap, it's smart. if you see someone do it, you know to tow missile their asses next time they want to try it.

that's why every time I approach a base, I always have 3 things. lightning rounds, bombs, and a tow missile. I run as many of those as I can collect over that base before attempting to land on it, and that prevents things like the campers from bothering me.

you don't think that's cheap? lol, then what would you consider as cheap? it's not smart. it's common sense that you can sit and aim at the flag all day and kill someone who touches it if they don't look in every cranny for a tank/rpg-guy, but it's definitely cheap. only people who have no skills will camp out like that and take cheap shots at people. if you can throw a mine somewhere around there where i won't see it, and take me out that way (while you go do something productive), then that's fine -- i do that -- but spending your whole time waiting for a cheap shot? that's lame.

CreativeWriter
08-29-2008, 07:19 AM
Hmm, the jetpacks really change the air game. I felt "swarmed" and "surrounded" lots tonight (playing on the expert servers). As a predominantly air guy, this is bad news. It would be nice if there were some new anti-jetpack weapon (a jammer or "death cloud" or "air net" or something) to even the playing-field with warhawks. The game is named Warhawk, after all... I didn't anticipate how spry the jetpacks would make ground players. They're like grasshoppers bouncing all around... What I've liked about the air game is that it feels less hectic than ground wars. Targets move in mostly straight lines, and map awareness is key to finding new enemies. I'm worried also that the team games will turn into big deathmatches, since everything is so chaotic now.

<feeling discouraged, but that might be for OT reasons, too>

Hrama
08-29-2008, 08:27 AM
Ya know, CreativeWriter, I can kind of understand where you are coming from, as it does make warhawks a lot more susceptible to ground troops and it does seem like you're surrounded a lot of the time, making gameplay a bit more chaotic when there are a lot of players. Anyone can just drop down from the sky at any time to cause problems. As purely a ground guy myself, I have to say I love what the jetpacks have accomplished, not so much that they can fly, but just as far as getting across the map. In capture the flag, I can finally boost up close enough to a jeep that has runaway with our flag, or I can finally dodge a tank long enough to either get away or have a chance at hitting it with the rocket launcher. Vehicles are evadable now and actual, legitimate targets for troop weapons, thank god. For a guy like me, the boost is the only real, useful part as anyone in a jetpack might as well have a huge bulls eye on their chest. That and it's a sitting duck for a Warhawk, unless they have the rocket launcher though, I must admit it does feel kind of nice to be able to get close enough to target warhawks as they have had a ridiculous advantage against anyone on the ground. Vengeance is so sweet. The one thing that is getting to me is the sniper rifle. Goodness, you can sit anywhere in the map and snipe now, it's... frustrating especially when you end up on the team where your warhawk/tank spawns are getting camped and a guy from all the way across the map can snipe anyone right where the jetpacks spawn. Ugh.

Frosty: that game you invited me into was lame, lol. I seemed to be the only one doing much and it was a total base rape. I had 60-something kills.

Jetpacks are so...

Lovely.

The side dash is the best, I can make fun of tanks now. Dash left, run right flyyyyy away. I'm a ground pounder, so sneaking up on a base and dashing back across the map with the jetpack has become so much fun, the speed of CTF games has just doubled.

It's funny you say that. Usually, I'm in a jeep traveling to another location, and those who like to camp out in tanks are normally granted with a rude awaken when I suddenly exit the vehicle, kick the afterburners into full throttle to rock myself straight up into the air just as the first shot is fired. From there I'll torch the tank and the person inside of it into submission.

There was this one time where I only had land mines. I simply performed the same tactic as before but this time dropped the mines down on it at 360 degrees, trapping the person inside the tank at a stand still. From here I just kep attacking 'em with grenades. LOL!

Jet packs so help balance this game for a lot of the ground combat - especially those with binoculars and gives you a moderate fighting chance than before against the warhawks.

I dont know, i have the feeling all better players bought that Fallen Star Booster and in the normal rooms are only total idiots.

I was yesterday in 2 games (Zones/TDM) and in both was no one in my team capturing the spawn points.
All just tried rushing for kills and at the end the enemy was in our base 15 minutes long spawnkills.

This is my biggest gripe with Warhawk... *The online community*
Unless you play in private rooms with large numbers of people the game is not that fun IMO. Playing in random rooms gets very frustrating, because this game requires a lot of teamwork and communication. Typically I end up in rooms with little to no communication and get frustrated very quickly with Warhawk. I really like the jet packs and the expansion pack, but the same issue I have with this title are still there.

That is why I usually play on the expert servers... There aren't as many morons as on other games

Expert games suffer as well. I just got out of a few expert games where one side played the entire time in Warhawks. My team's response? Grab jetpacks and become slow floating fodder.

hence why we should start an active clan so we can game together. My brother just got a ps3 and we did some ctf today. I usually play for a for kills, protecting the flag and taking shots at capturing the flag when I can but with my bro I was able to play more aggressively. In Spire Shut-in my bro lifted me up on his warhawk so I could jump through the window to get the flag so I didnt have to run through mines and campers... they never say it coming.

And in an omega dawn level he got in a jeep and i flew him from are base to theres and back for a capture. The game is much more fun when you play with someone helping you win.

There's a tip about the jet packs that I doubt any of you know about. I had a feeling it would work after much research and an experiment since before the jet packs were ever released. Needless to say, my prediction was right. :)

Well, some of us still need to be invited to the clan (Me!) and I will definitely try to be there as often as possible if people want to play.

Yea, unfortunately the games that Jax sets up are either too late, or use packs that I don't have, and I'm not sure if we have enough people, or would be able to get enough people together at one time to have a Euro match.

matt, the jet pack is the key to pulling it off.

do you know how the jet pack only allows you to land on most surfaces, much better than that of the warhawk, but is still limited to some surfaces within the illuminated map? ok, to unlock this, simply get into a warhawk with a jet pack on, land the warhawk on top of the surface as you normally would anywhere else and exit it. if done correctly, you should be able to walk off the warhawk and onto the surface. if by any chance you turn the jet pack on while on one of these surfaces, simply hover back to/over your warhawk until you drop onto it - indicating that you are once again grounded to the surface.

whats the advantage to doing that?
I mean i know you can get over some bases and use the b-nocs but that seems like more work than its worth. Maybe i'm missing something though?

I haven't actually played the game since the new patch came out, so I don't have a clue what you're talking about :P

I'm downloading all the packs and stuff atm, gonna get on it later on.

defending a base, zone or flag while out of sight on one the roof tops. most players rarely look in a place that you can't land, leaving them to be an easy target - especially with a sniper rifle, when taking them down, and most of the time, they can be a bit oblivious as to where a shot(s) may have come from due this type of stealth. ;)

Also you won't show up as a Jetpack icon in the map if you land instead of hover.....Hmm, good tip Domination, definitely will try that out.
Thanks.
