Kojima: "Next level of gaming" not yet possible
Monday 21-Jul-2008 5:01 PM Improving graphics and sound will only go so far, says MGS creator

The "next level" of gaming is not yet possible on current-gen hardware, says Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

Speaking to BBC's Click program, Kojima said that improving the visuals and audio in games will only go so far in future console generations.

"We will keep on making games for consoles and the graphics and sound quality will get better and better," he said. "But I think no matter how much we improve the quality, there is only so much we can hear or see.

"The next level will be when we start improving the backgrounds, the things you don't instantly see but enhance the experience. For example, there are leaves in the background and when you water them they grow. Instead of the backgrounds being pre-programmed, they actually respond to what the player does.

"This is not possible right now but maybe in the future it will be, and that is when we will have entered the next era of gaming," he added.

He's as technology-obsessed as ever then. Not that we're complaining; MGS4 is a massively impressive game, and a terrific showcase for the PS3.

Kojima is currently rumoured to be working on a new game based on RPG series Snatcher, with No More Heroes mastermind Suda 51.

First 50 GB Blu Ray isn't enough and now the whole generation is not enough?

His wife had better be insanely hot.

Gotta love his "shoot for the moon, so if you miss you'll land amongst the stars" type attitude.

It's basically in every classroom in North America.

Ok exaggeration, but at least in many, many schools on this side of the world you'll see this banner.

Aren't stars further away than the moon?! ;)

I can see what he's saying though - it'll no longer be "look how good the characters look" or "see how much detail is in that car", but little things that can be expressed realistically (particularly in terms of being dynamic and reactive, along with physics affecting much more of the environment).

^or virtual worlds that change and adapt as time goes on. Imagine a GTA where you have full seasons, and the grass in your front yard will gradually die when a dog pees on it. A world where some days are smoggier than others in the cities. A game where you have to watch out for bad weather, to avoid being caught up in a nasty storm when planning an assault in enemy territory. Little things like that, which add realism, but we tend to overlook in our twitch-impulse instant action type games. No more structures that you can blast with a tank 100 times and there not be a mark on the wall (look at how impressive killzone's level damage is... now imagine that on every object in a GTA sized city). Super massive multiplayer games where entire countries are tracked in virtual world wars, where things such as nuclear fallout are also tracked in real time and have to be considered when planning attacks on enemies. There is all kinds of detail missing from today's games that we could work towards. I applaud him for looking that far ahead.

come on viper, with attitudes like that we would still be playing games @480i and 2 channels of audio.

Jax, the 50 GB BD wasn't enough because of the volume of redundant data to keep load times down. Had nothing to do with the audio or resolution.
