So my laptop which was supposed to be super bad ass has had the video card die on it twice now, and it is no longer under warranty (dell wants to charge me 500$ for a new video card). It is a geforce 7900 gs go
So I was thinking of getting maybe a cheapish laptop which will do everything I need but not be for gaming and then maybe just building or buying a desktop which I can use for games if I ever wanted too.
Anyone have any advice on what to get, keeping price in mind?

If you just want a laptop for Internet and videos, get a netbook.
Some can be had for just a few hundred.

Your better off building your own. Desktop wise all those fancy expensive one's ten to cost 10-15% more than doing it yourself sometimes more. Just don't skimp on important things like PSU's. That and know the warranties of the parts and what they need for them before throwing anything out as not needed.

Stay away from the Alienware.
Unless you don't mind paying several hundred (thousand) more than what you could do on your own.

... warranties are nice on multi Gnote investments.

Desktop: build your own, stay away from alienware.
notebook: Look at the netbooks like the EEE, the mininote or the acer aspire. Or look at the asus range of regular sized laptops.

Well I ended up getting a laptop today from bestbuy, got a decent deal on it I think.
Toshiba Satellite A305-S6898
It has vista on it, but I have the other HDD from my other computer that I can put in here when I want to use xp.

Is it possible to buy a laptop with Ubuntu or something preloaded or a laptop with no OS? I'm sure it is but I'm not sure what website sells laptops like that.
I have this bad feeling my laptop is going to die and I don't really care to have a Windows PC this time...

http://www.system76.com/ - Company specifically sells for Ubuntu, they have a great rep among ubuntu'ers and are almost considered an official OEM of Canonical.
