I decided to start showing everyone some of the work being done on our movie affiliated website, Cinephiliacs. Just in time for Oscar season, too. This week, I am planning to see (or have seen) Yes Man, Seven Pounds, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Tale of Desperaux. The first two movies I mentioned should be posted either tomorrow or Sunday. The other two will be posted either Sunday or Monday, depending on my work schedule.

To give you an idea of what kind of reviews are going to be coming, here are reviews from last week on three very different movies. Happy-Go-Lucky, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Nothing Like the Holidays. Delgo, the biggest flop of 2008 by BO and budget standards, was mercifully skipped.

I completely agree with the score on "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

Why is the rating system only based on four stars though? No much room for flexibility.

Its just the system I adopted, I suppose. There's no particular eureka moment aspired to it, I don't think, but the three critics I read the most: Roger Ebert, Michael Phillips, and James Berardinelli, all use the system, so I guess it was by osmosis. I've also used the four-star system for games.

Five stars, I guess, would stretch things a little too thin for me.

Seven Pounds is half-finished and Slumdog should be along by the end of the day.

Two more reviews. Seven Pounds and Slumdog Millionaire. One is a great movie and the other is repeatedly slammed into a bloody pulp. Care to guess which is which?

Will Smith seems awkward for that role, even in just the trailers.
