Disgaea 3 release date announced
2009-01-07 13:41:00 by Manager
Square Enix has announced that Nippon Ichi Software's Disgaea 3 will be released in Europe on the 20th of February. A bunch of images can be found inside.
Square Enix press release:
Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces that Nippon Ichi Software’s Disgaea®3: Absence of Justice will be released by Square Enix across PAL territories on 20th February 2009 exclusively on the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system.
Welcome to the twisted world of the Nether Institute, Evil Academy where good is bad and bad is good. In this school a good student is somebody that excels in delinquent activities such as skipping classes or not doing their homework, whereas a bad student arrives to school early and does their homework on time.
This is the setting for Disgaea3, a rich and deep Strategic RPG that’s not afraid to display a very bizarre sense of humour. It’s a winning combination that will leave you laughing one minute and fighting cunning enemies the next. Where special attacks can deliver up to 100 million points worth of damage and the power of the PS3 is used to deliver 2D sprites, albeit lots of them!
John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “With Disgaea3, Nippon Ichi have created a wonderful world full of bizarre characters and deep, addictive gameplay. I hope everyone enjoys playing this unique and rewarding title.”

Disgaea 3 review:
Grinding, grinding, grinding and grinding - this is a Disgaea game, no doubt, and if you're a fan of the series then there's no point in reading this review. In fact, it's hard to believe you've got the time to spare between bouts of eating, sometimes sleeping and grinding the hell out of your team of demon schoolkids to even look at this block of text.
So, yeah - get back to the game. Let the uneducated/non-obsessives read on from here.
Now those imaginary people have gone, I can address you readers with a question: do you have hundreds of hours to spare? Would you rather put this time to use addressing problems in the local community, donating to charity and leading a healthy lifestyle, or would you use this time ranking up your brawler character to level 999 and beyond?
If you're going for the second option then you're probably a despicable human being - but on the plus side Disgaea 3 is the game for you. Every cloud, and all that.
So there's a story to this strategy RPG - does anyone care by now? We all know the drill; it's funny, reasonably well-written, quirky in its sense of humour and presented with godawful English voice actors, whom can be turned back to their original Japanese should you so wish. And you should so wish.
This time it's something about an Evil Academy, the main character is the lead honour student (i.e. he's the most evil) and there's some pretty funny deviations on what it is to be good, evil, well-behaved, a delinquent etc. So far, so reasonably okay.
But this isn't about the story. It never has been and never will be. The fact that Nippon Ichi bother to put anything in there to distract from the gameplay in the first place is quite an odd move, and the fact that they put a reasonable amount of effort into it shows they have real pride in their pro-grinding propaganda. Plus there is always an option to completely skip story elements with the press of the triangle button. So hey - can't complain, can we?
The game itself is exactly what you'd expect if you've so much as looked at a Disgaea title before - strategy battles of the utmost complexity, fought out on embarrassingly low-rent backgrounds with graphics that look bloody good (on a SNES) and with some steep difficulty spikes that require muchos muchos grinding before they can be overcome.
Lo, that's exactly what you get here too.
There are changes to the established formula - gone is the Demon Council, replaced with the Classroom. Here you rearrange seating positions to form stronger partnerships between characters and carry out actions that are pretty much exactly the same as those you used the council for in previous titles - new characters, passing motions and the like. Being bold: it adds nothing much.
A few minor swaps, changes and additions have been made in the main game as well, though they really don't affect things a huge amount in the grand scheme - it's still the same wonderful, tactical, overwhelming delight it always was.
Yes, it can take over your life if you let it. The hours can rack up into triple-figures if you're so inclined to allow them to. Characters can become obscenely powerful and of ridiculously high levels if you put the time into them. But never forget this is a game that - while allowing you to get lost in the ever-present Item World for days at a time - will let you play as a straightforward SRPG, completing the story in a matter of hours and feeling pretty satisfied with yourself as a result.
If you are so inclined.
Those that want to actually do more than scratch the surface, however, are more than provided for with this infinite chasm of grinding, levelling, equipping, item-worlding and story-skipping. It may well be one of the most overwhelmingly complex series of recent times - if not all time - but Disgaea 3 provides for the casual and the hardcore with great aplomb, and neither side is let down by it.
Just so long as you remember that it's only a game, and when you've racked up hundreds of hours' worth of play you may want to take a step back to smell the roses. Then get Mao up to level 999,999,999,999,999.
THE VERDICT: It's Disgaea again and it's bloody wonderful again. As complex as you let it be, as overwhelming as it wants to be and as great as it always has been. Two thumbs up.
9/10

Then get Mao up to level 999,999,999,999,999.
surely that's a joke o_O
The vids look alright, the sprites look 'ok' quality-wise, but I'm more bothered about gameplay & the maps look pretty good quality.

While i love the game and the humor within it. The graphics are straight from a PS2 game, do not go in to this expecting high end graphics. There is also no Dolby Digital (no 5.1 surround).
The game is great though, classic Disgaea
The shitty sprites will keep me away from this. I would get any game with shitty quality art work (2D, sprite or otherwise).

Z, i advise you to put that notion to one side with this game. see it as playing chess with very simplistic pieces... it's still the same game. Disgaea is one of the most addictive games you will ever play and the only reason more people don't know that is because of the graphics. GET IT.
