And I just wanted to pick your brains for ideas. I have a general idea, it would span 3+ books as it is right now.

Your first mistake is asking us what we think. Like Nike says, "Just do it"... Or was that R-Kelly who said that? Whatever... Just make sure you have at least 90% of the book mapped out before you start writing, or else you'll be in trouble.

Fuck what we think, write your own goddamned book.

I am doing the same thing right now.

I've been writing a script now for the last ten years. I got about 60 pages done and destroyed it. I still have ideas knocking around in my head though... Very good ideas btw :pinky:

I don't want the world to be exposed to what goes on in your brain.

Do you really think this is the way to write a book?

Writing - writing well, I should say - is hard work. It drives you insane, keeps you up at night. Most writers have gone through horrifying periods where they couldn't come up with anything at all, but they didn't solve it by asking others to do the work for them.

Besides, you can write a book with new ideas and it could be crap, or you could rehash every cliche out there, and your book could be great. Words are like musical notes, ideas like chords. The point is how you put them together, cause on their own they're worthless.

Bingo.

You'll learn something about yourself, doing this. I've written 42 over the years and let me tell you almost all of them were very bad. I chalked the first three dozen as practice. I didn't really care what they were about. Just getting the crap out of my system. I'm getting better at this, but it is a slow, arduous process. I'm still in the middle of my second cut of my 42nd book and I've been working on the project for almost six months now.

You should have fun doing this. Well, about as much fun as an endeavor like this could be. It is a very difficult, very brutal process, but creating a story and creating your own little world is exciting. But take it seriously, and take it one day at a time, and work at a pace that you can manage without causing total burnout.

Also, in regards to your subject, write what you know. That doesn't mean your life experience by itself. I mean, who wants to listen to 400 pages of teen angst? That shit's been done to death. Extend that to your interests in life and what you like to read. In my case, it's mystery/spy/noir. If you like sci-fi, then try writing sci-fi.

By the way, if you're gonna write, you damn well better read. How good a writer you are is invariably determined by how much you read and how much you learn from good and bad writers.

Good luck.

I beg of you not to put any "shit" pictures in your books.

I had a guy who was writing a book follow me around last night while I was drunk and write down all the raunchy stories I decided were appropriate to share. His book's topic is "Thing you should learn, but not from your own experience".

Ha. I'm not suffering delusions, and I know i'm not popping three books out. I can only write well, if I'm in the mood to write. So as of write now I'm in that mood. I mapped out a story arc, and I know it's going to suck. But it's something I always have wanted to do, so whether it sucks or not isn't really an issue for me.

The crazy thing about art (or in other words, entertainment) is that it is full of rules (albeit usually cultural) and has no rules at the same time. There is no set good or bad, right or wrong in the myriad of ideas a poem, a melody, a painting, a car's appearance, etc... that can be thought of in the human mind. The only truth that is constant is inspiration; the only thing I would both envy and fear in a man. I'm basically saying fuck everyone else's advice, including my own.

I've been thinking of writing a book for years now.
Many attempts have been consigned to rubbish bin.
I think (for me) the best method to continually lengthen my short stories 'till I'm rolling off novels.

Anyway, you have to really want to write a book to write a (good) book.

I like writing, but papers I would write for English classes pissed me off... sometimes I would have professors or teachers that loved the words I wrote. Others would hate my stuff. I have felt that way since I was a freshman in high school.

If I had to write a book, it would be a memoire. I write in a blog regularly, so my thoughts are there... I would just have to organize them and put it all together. Then I would give it to my kids :)

I'm guessing you are going to write a work of fiction?
