Like most people, I have been curious about what Blizzard has been concocting for their first leap into the console market. As far as I have seen, not that it’s any surprise, it is a very expansive and involved game with a clear linear storyline.
In Starcraft: Ghost you take the role of Nova, an elite Ghost operative and officer of the Terran Dominion. She is sent on your typical scouting and assassination missions. Like the Ghost she is, Nova must keep her presence a secret. So, all bodies must be disposed of, otherwise they could alert a patrol which would alert the base. All bodies that would logically carry ammo or guns can be searched for useful items. Nova has three weapons in her arsenal: the gauss rifle, combat pistol and sniper rifle. Nova also has access to three special abilities, although these are not all available from the beginning. All of her abilities drain her “psi-energy”, which is a rechargeable bar below her health meter.
The first, and most well known, is her ability to cloak. The cloaking ability is extremely powerful, but it has been balanced quite well. The psi-energy is drained at different speeds, depending on the level of physical exertion Nova is doing. This ability also provides for the possibility to do stealth kills. Stealth kills start out fairly simple, but depending on the difficulty of enemy, the combo of buttons to successfully stealth kill the unit will be more complex.
Nova’s second ability is an advanced sight modification. While in this sight mode objects that can be used will usually be outlined in red, making them clearly identifiable. The sight mode also shows you clearly where a unit’s weak spot is located (for example, a Terran marine’s weak spot is the open face mask).
The final ability that Nova gains is the speed modification. This ability allows Nova to slow down time, while moving at her normal speed - moving much faster then anything else. The real power behind this ability is the chance to use it while performing hacks or pulling off complex combos. If you use your speed ability before performing either action, it allows you more response time to execute these actions.
Blizzard is taking a very realistic approach to this game. Obviously if there are Ghosts in the Starcraft universe, people will try to counteract or nullify the abilities that infiltrators possess. Therefore there are sections that may drain your psi-energy, or prevent you from using your abilities entirely.
They are also taking full advantage of the rich world they have crafted. Virtually every unit that was present in the previous Starcraft titles will be in this title as well. You can call down air strikes, EMP blasts, Irradiation or even a nuclear strike by using a triangulation mini-puzzle to assure that the target is painted correctly. Often times you will have to perform tasks that a scout like the Ghost would, such as painting a target for ground or air support.
Ghost has an intriguing story, a fair amount of strategy, and some good, clean, unfiltered violence. Starcraft: Ghost is already well polished and seems to be on track to easily be out for its “end of the year” release date. Although, we all know the track record…
What are your thoughts on the game. I have no high hopes as this is a multiplatform game after all. Still blizzard makes some cracking games
