With services like Netflix around, it's always astounded me that anyone rents movies from the Xbox Live Marketplace (I think games are about equally expensive and no idea about the time frame because I don't care)... in fact, a little piece of me always believed that probably zero people used that service. I am equally surprised (if not more just by the number of downloads) that so many people rent movies from PSN, given that is it priced really steeply and not very flexible for how long the rental is (I particularly mean the 'only available 24 hours after you watched it' part). If they can get people to be okay with that, more power to them! I think I'm too much of a cheapskate to be okay with that.

Yeah, online services, no matter which one you look at are pretty expensive. It's quite expensive renting stuff on iTunes. There's a place near my house that lets you rent 4 new releases for $12 bucks.

The only disadvantage is time, but even if you only rent 2 movies it's still cheaper than if you rented 2 movies from the internet.

Yeah, I've got Netflix already, but since it said there were so many downloads in the article, I thought maybe PSN was way cheaper than renting movies over Live, but I guess it's sort of the same. (Like I said though I've never rented a movie on my 360 either so I'm just guessing.)

Digital distribution of films and music should be so much cheaper, but I guess it's not so yet because of many reasons. The method is still young, some people are willing to pay such prices, some kind of fair play towards physical renting and selling, etc. In any case, I'll fully welcome it the day it becomes fully affordable for everyone.

By the way, I haven't seen anyone posting that the European video stores should be making an appearance at the end of this month in a handful of countries. About time.

President of Gearbox questions Valves lack of PS3 support

Speaking with OPM in the UK, Randy Picthford has questions the motives behind the discussion not to support the PS3 by Vavle. Randy Picthford has worked with vavle in the past, and gave his opinion on the PS3 to the magazine. He states "the PS3 is awesome. I think Valve...I don't know why they are doing that. It's weird. but yeah, the Playstation platform's really cool. It's different to others and it's certainly a challenge to be able to develop software for. But that's where the fun is, right?".

After praising the PS3, Randy Picthford say's "I noticed something on the net not too long ago. Doug Lombardi (Valve's VP Marketing) had to take a swipe at the PS3 again, and I thought it was foolish. I read it the same way I read fanboys. Like there's a guy who brought the Sony platform and he's a Sony guy, so he decides he's going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there's a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing. Those guys are childish and narrow minded, It's the same kind of thing" Randy then takes the comments to a more personal level "Valve think their own stuff is the only stuff that matters, to the point where they have their own distribution platform. It's like, I don't care about retail, about Marketplace, or PSN, I'm going to have Steam. It's cool, it's good, and they're doing a good job but at the same time they're reliant on the rest of the world. They had to do that deal with EA. When I see the L4D ad on the television I don't see a Valve logo, I see a EA logo, and when I bought it, I bought it at a store".

Gearbox has a multi-platform game out, which everybody seems to be enjoying on both the PC, PS3 and Xbox360, so Randy couldn't help but also comment on the Orange box fiasco. "I'm actually kind of mad at Doug because with the Orange Box, he said the 360 and PC versions are the good ones and the PS3 version is like the stepchild because some other developer made it. Well you Valve don't really think that, because look what you've done on the PC side. You've supported that, you've added all this content to Team Fortress 2, and you've left us hanging. It's hard to accept that genuinely, because I know the business, I know you guys make half the money on the PS3 version because you've got other fingers in the pie, and other developers getting a cut. It benefits you if nobody buys that, and only buys the PC version, because you make the most money. There's this underlying sleaziness. You know what, I thought the performance was a little slower on the PS3, but it Looked better. The colors were nicer, I thought the image looked better on PS3. It was a trade-off between the performance and the visuals. And I like visuals".

360 Gamers Defecting To PS3 For Holiday Sequels?


It's coming time for the Holiday launches of anticipated multiplatform sequels -- and new data provided to Gamasutra by OTX's GamePlan Insights finds that many sequel-buyers might be switching platforms, defecting from Xbox 360 to PlayStation 3 for more than one major release.

In addition to identifying the cash-strapped consumer's most-wanted games for the holiday season, GamePlan Insights previously examined "franchise lineage," or gamer intent to purchase sequels to favorite games.

According to OTX analyst Nick Williams, data on franchise lineage highlights an interesting trend between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 SKUs for Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2, the two top-ranking titles on the latest purchase intent charts -- and also two of the titles with the strongest franchise lineage.

OTX data shows that 15 percent of those who plan to buy the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed 2 own the Xbox 360 version of the original, while only 7 percent of those who plan to buy the Xbox 360 version own the original game on PS3.

The data highlights a shift, at least among fans of Assassin's Creed, in favor of the PS3 -- a "sizable portion," according to Williams, of players who plan a console defection for the second installment.

Moreover, the trend for Modern Warfare 2 is the same, according to OTX. "The PS3 seems poised to shift the ratio of Xbox 360 to PS3 sales for most major multi-platform releases in its favor among dual owners," Williams tells us.

I wonder does any of this have to do with the free online offering a lot of the same community and digital features that Microsoft's console is offering plus the added bonus features embedded into the console over the competition. Whatever the case, it seems that $350 bundle could be looking very interesting to some.

Sony didn't have exclusive third party support this time, but their first party stuff has been compelling since year 1...I just think it's even more good games, features are fleshed out, and it's reasonably priced now.

Valve should've been on the PS3 from the get go. There's really no excuse. I don't know what it is but it comes down to bad decision making. The PS3 has a great market to put games on.

Valve should have been learning how to develop for the PS3 instead of bitching about it's architecture.

They argue that having easier architectures to develop for allows to create better gameplay experiences, but if you look at the games sony is putting it out, valves claims are just bullshit.

Valve's games aren't all they're cracked up to be anyway.

Half-Life 2 Episode 2 came two years ago and there's still no date for Episode 3. Valve aren't exactly cranking out games in a timely basis, they aren't the most relevant multiplatform developers in any case. Not to mention HL2 still has very dated graphics except from some effects. Granted that HL2 gameplay is gold though.

I would assume having your 360 die on you multiple of times has a big effect on such a decision as well.

It is amazing that PS3 isn't only the most sophisticated home console, it is one of the most sturdiest ever made.

The sad fact is Pitchford is right when he says they are abusing the good nature of PS3 and 360 owners but most 360 owners will never admit that. Most of the added content that the PC version of most of their games get never get released on the console side. They have to pay for free content on live. I could be laying blame in the wrong place because maybe this is MS's or Valve's idea but Pitchford also calls them out for screwing over the 360 owner on Live because they will get more money from Steam which makes me wonder if they arent happy to price free content on Live. Not to mention the whole L4D2 debacle. I mean i wasnt impressed with HALO ODST either but at least Bungie came out and told everyone its not a full game from the start. These guys really expect you to believe L4D2 is a full game deserving to be sold at full price and it only took a year to make? Talk about a reversal of The Orange box cotent overload.

Like Jax says though they are becoming a relic and will die soon and their loyal following of Pirates on PC will help them along sooner rather than later. Even ID software realized this.

I never played any of there games, and don't plan too...I touched Half-life for a second, and thought it was really bland and ugly. It didn't age well, so I doubt I'll ever play it. Dunno what the fuss is about these devs though, I haven't played anything from them that was really "special". All their titles reek of KB&M style anyway, hasn't appealed to me as a console gamer.

Half Life 2 has a good storyline and interesting gameplay, but the graphics and art are completely dated.

Valve are probably one of the very few PC developers who will survive for a while already, but they're neglecting themselves on big pieces of the pie and even Gabe Newell recently apologised for some bad PS3 comments in the past. Seeing how rampant the PC piracy is right now, and since there's no immediate solution for that, there are plenty of PC developers who seem on the verge of giving up. Consoles are the real driver of the videogame market.
