Been a quiet couple of months but now there is Hurricane Ida that looks like it'll be a threat.

Looks like this could turn into another Wilma.

I question if the waters are warm enough for that... Wilma hit over 200mph
Looks like high shear in the gulf also... she won't be a strong one when she hits.

I was wondering why this thread would've been bumped in November.

Last year was bad for storms everywhere.
I got stuck in a cat 4 that nearly impacted and then a strong cat 3 that impacted right where I was. Fuck that shit again, it made a mess.

None of this shit is going to touch me.
But I will have like three feet of snow everywhere here in about a month, so.. it all sucks in different ways.

oh yes, it does work like that. the pressure drop will cause your windows to burst from the inside out (the pressure in the center of a hurricane is very low). one person who rode out hurricane ike in a hotel on the beach told everyone on his floor to crack their sliding glass doors just before the storm hit. after the storm passed, their floor was the only one inhabitable, with the many of the rest of the guests stuck sleeping in the lobby because their windows exploded.
damn... intensified to a tropical storm and narrowed it's path on my back yard. |

Oh no, it doesn't... the inside of almost all homes is not sealed, and pressure equalizes whether windows are opened or not. Glass breaks due to stress distributions caused by high wind velocity.
Hurricanes do have low pressure centers, but not extremely so. A couple hundred millibars AT MOST, which is enough to pop your ears, but not to shatter windows. "Pressure" damage from hurricanes and tornadoes is not actually due to the pressure gradients at all, it is due to the entrapment of wind currents under roofs and in alcoves on the exterior of homes, forming miniature high pressure pockets inside the house that eventually shears the roof off, which causes structural instability of the walls and eventual collapse. Not trying to nitpick, but I hate it when an urban myth pervades so much so that it is "common knowledge". If the pressure of a hurricane is low enough to cause stress to unsealed homes, the last thing you need to worry about it opening your windows... I would concentrate instead on home insurance. |

^^yep, wind getting into your house is the biggest problem.
Wonder what the possibility of Ida doing a 360 in the Gulf. |
