20 million Xboxes sold worldwide
19 million GameCubes sold worldwide MS - $3 billion in losses since Xbox launch. Nintendo - $3.5 billion in profits since GC launch. With Nin making that kind of money, they don't need to go sales crazy.

Thanks Viper to state a great point. I'm more of a Sony guy but that sales figure is important.

Nintendo definitely knows how to turn a profit, and I'll give them respect for that. I just wish they'd allow more mature games on the GameCube like God of War. There's too much blood and boobies in that game for Nintendo, and that's what scares all the mature gamers away from GameCube. Nintendo needs to cater to both the kids and the adults with the Revolution.

I don't think blood and boobies hold much of an arguement considering when BMX XXX came out Sony didn't want the developers to show the breasts on the females whilst Nintendo didn't seem to care either way. Its not that Nintendo dosn't want "mature" games on their system, its just past titles havn't sold as well compared to that on the Xbox and PS2. Which is the inherant problem with the Cube, most games that are non-Nintendo developed don't sell nearly as well compared to those on other systems (with a few exceptions, such as Soul Calibur 2). Which is the exact same case with everyone I know who owns a Gamecube (including myself). I have one for Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Geist, Donky Konga, ect. While I have a Xbox and PS2 for Katamari Damacy, Devil May Cry, Doom 3, Teken, Halo, God of War, GTA, Oddworld, ect.

I guess I'm just trying to pin a reason as to why no one my age even talks Nintendo anymore. If they allow mature games, then what's the deal? What I get from your reasoning is that most people buy the Gamecube for 1st party games, and those games are tiered towards young people? This may be the case, but Nintendo will have to do alot to send me (and others i believe) a message that they are ready for a different audience. Mario shooting bubbles in his latest game doesn't even come close to doing that. |

Nintendo worked with Silicon Knights to create Eternal Darkness, one of the most mature games ever made (not in terms of boobies and sexual innuendo, that just makes a game immature). Coming in June is Geist. A co-creation of Nintnedo and N-Space with a very mature theme. Nintendo lured Capcom into exclusivity, we know how that went, with Resident Evil. If a mature game, such as GTA III, isn't on GC it's because the company, Rockstar, didn't want it on GC, not the other way around.
It's the mainstream media and unkowing gamers that spout the 'Nintendo is only for kids' ideology. Nintendo aims at everyone. Wind Waker, looked cartoony, but was damn fun. You're right that most owners purchase mostly 1st party games. There are two reasons many games do not appear on Nintendo. 1. Mainstream media doesn't make Nintendo sound cool enough. They tell consumers what the cool systems are and readers follow that. 2. Publishers know that Nintendo software is hard to equal and believe their products just won't sell on a Nintendo system because they'd have to directly compete with Nintendo on that Nintendo system. Overall, sales of games have had a big increase over last year so for the moment, they are all winning. |
