PSP2: a must have addition to PS3

The next version of Sony's PSP will sport an integrated digital video camera that will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3, according to an anonymous source. The feature, which will utilize the PSP's Wi-Fi support, will be marketed as the new way to chat with friends while on the go.

According to the tipster, the "PSP 2" will also gain the recently rumored NAND flash storage, though the first generation of the new model will only be available with 4GB instead of the 8GB currently speculated. Sony will also trim approximately a quarter of inch from the device, and offer it in three color choices — black, white and silver.

The source claims that the tiny camera will be an off-the-shelf stock unit that is currently being used in several Sony Ericsson mobile phones, and will also allow users to take still photos, in addition to video. Its placement will be directly below the PSP's screen, where the "PSP" logo can currently be found.

The new PSP's video streaming capabilities will be considered a must-have addition for Sony's upcoming PS3 console. While details are obviously scant at this point, the source say the streaming will be made possible through the upcoming HUB PlayStation service, which will supposedly launch alongside the PS3 and compete directly with Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

PSP World has not been able to confirm the existence of a new PSP or any of the alleged new features claimed by the tipster, so the above should be taken with a grain of salt. However, such a revamp would seem to fit in with Sony's vision for the product.

this is a revamped PSP (much like DS revamps) with flash ram and camera built in, but thats not to say that Sony won't offer some sort of upgrade to those who have already bought a PSP. although this is only a rumour at the minute it seems, like the article says, that it fits perfectly with Sony's PSP to PS3 connectivity.

When you said PSP2, I thought you meant a new generation of handheld. This is just the same handheld but with modifications and attachments.

I don't think the source is false at all, not on the digital camera part anyway. Those who have a PSP, or played around with its interface in stores, will notice a small icon in the photo section for the sole purpose of digital camera images, not to mention a prototype camera attachment shown at E3'04. So it was pretty obvious that one was on its way.

yes, but I think that is for connecting digital cameras directly to PSP or something.

they never did say anything about it since then. I guess a re-model having a camera installed in it isn't out of the question. after all, we are talking about handhelds here not consoles. let's see what they have instore at E3.

its talking about the upgrade because of the connectivity with PS3! i don't own a PSP so i wouldn't have seen it on those boards, but by the way you've phrased it 'and now PSP' i think this was here first, so please let it go.
back on topic: don't forget that games only use 222mhz and when GT is released on the machine its going to go up 333mhz. well 333mhz, built in camera, 4gflash, quarter inch smaller, probably many more firmware upgrades, could well be classified as PSP2 surely. yes i know you can uprade the mhz now but to my knowledge nothing has used it yet.

Yo Mama, I agree with your thoughts regarding a new PSP in 2006...
I just purchased my PSP last year, but hopefully with firmware updates and additional peripherals you could update your existing PSP.

I'm curious what the price tag would be for the PSP2, I smell a $399.99 price tag...

Unless there is a digital camera USB cord that supports PSP and digital cameras, I think the transfer would be close to impossible without a base station/PC on hand. The ports are not the same at all.

Moreover, there has been plenty of things that Sony mentioned before and never spoke of until it was ready.

exactly! Sony wouldn't leave all those PSP owners in the lurch like that, they would offer an upgrade. okay it wouldn't be as sleek and tidy as PSP2 but it would be functional. nobodies complaining about the add ons coming for DS to bring it closer to PSP in functionality so i can't see too many people complaining about this either - if this is indeed what Sony do.

Well, I don't think that Sony are going to release a PSP2 anytime soon. It's not like them at all. They'll offer firmware updates for the PSP to add functionality for maximum compatability for PSP to PS3 connectivity. Considering that the PSP hasn't been out that late at all and I could have sworn that Sony themselves stated that they are aiming for a minimum of five years with the PSP.

All the stuff at E3 2006 was prototypes or were just non-functioning. They were just concepts to give to the audience the ideas of what the PSP can do. Sony usually releases a major update after the PSP has become profitable. And I still beleive they are losing money per PSP still. These rumors are just going about because of the Nintendo DS Lite.

I dont think they would put the camera below the screen, it would capture the person properly in my opinion. Also, if the PSP were to be used as a digicam, why would the camera be on the front, they would put it on the back, like with phones.

Maybe if the add a usb camera somewhat like the gameboy one that came out years ago but added the swivel tech that some 3G phones have..

Try takeing the MS pro duo out of a sony DG cam, and insert it into the PSP. You'll see that the images are displayed in the "Digital Camera" folder, psp photo menu.

I like I've said before, if there is any truth to these rumors at all, the only thing that makes sense is for a PSPSlim in a few years, I'm sure Sony knows their position in the handheld market isn't to the position where they could get away with this.

If this was the case, and they did release a PSP2. Could you imagine the price? This, to me, is the main factor as to why PSP sales aren't the best in the world. They seriously need to focus on what they're doing and try and reduce the price of the original PSP.

but I don't expect sony to have any 65 nm till atleast 2007, more likely 2008.
