Digitimes: 3rd part producers plan to ship PS3 PCBs from the mid 3rd quarter

Massive ramp in the making.
Quote:
Compeq, NPC and Ya Hsin to manufacture PCBs for PS3

Taiwan printed circuit board (PCB) makers including Compeq Manufacturing, Nanya Printed Circuit Board (NPC) and Ya Hsin Industrial are now preparing to sample PCBs for Sony's PS3 game console and the revenue contribution is expected to start from the middle of the third quarter, according to industry sources.

Although Sony has delayed the launch of the PS3 from the third quarter to the middle of November, industry makers estimate that the PCB partners started sampling PCBs from April and shipments should start from the mid third quarter.

As Sony is expected to prioritize orders with long-established partners, NPC, Ya Hsin and Unimicron Technology are the three companies that are most likely to gain orders based on their past partnerships with Sony on PS2 and PSP PCBs production, the sources explained.

However, the partnership with Unimicron is not yet finalized, the sources noted.

See now who was telling me they thought it'd be mainland Chinese firms doing the motherboards? I knew it'd be Taiwan - c'mon now! Taiwan is like the silicon capital of the world.

Yeah, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that they keep using the manufacturers of the PS2 boards. But of course that does not rule out mainland China in the future.

Sounds promising they've been sampling boards since April. I hope it means they will have got the quality right by the time they go into mass production.

Wow, looks like SONY is lining up all its ducks to get the launch going without any hiccups..
By TGS we would know the software lineup..
2Million PS3 by Dec'06 that would be sweet...

Its definitely getting interesting to see how the race between Sony & MS unfolds..

so what from july to nov or so for production ?

Shouldn't be bad , numbers will start off low and it will most likely take till march to get up to 1m units a month (if there is no trouble) at leasts thats the only way i can make sense of the 6m by march and 1m a month figure

hehe reminds me of when our firm had a case out in Denver 2 years back regarding laser range finders. The Taiwanese company was our client and they are such nice folks and my god the money they spent on dinners lol. Their engineer was a damn braniac and they also made silicon for Sony ;-)
