Places That Time Forgot
I once visited a magical little beach in North Carolina a couple years ago.
I walked for many hours along the beach until I came across an interesting little beach-side destination. It was obvious that at one point (judging by the looks of things, 80s/early 90s) it was quite the happening spot for tourists and visitors coming to that beach. But now, while there were a few people in the stores and stuff, it was showing it's age quite well. It had a little deserted park and tiny little stores. One was selling brand new Sega Geneses (no sign of any consoles after that one present). There a was a quaint little bar with a few old people. And my favorite was this 80s looking pizza shop/garage with an abandoned (but still available for use) put-put golf next to it. When you go in there, it had old Mario bros 3 paintings on the wall and all these dusty old arcade cabinets. And the pizza looked and tasted like ![]() You know what Im talking about. The good stuff. And I just so happened that I arrived at a time where the sun was setting...perfect for a Don Henley summer classic like http://youtube.com/watch?v=ikqtdnqAZsI The place was extremely serene and mystical...I dont know, Im probably losing my mind. But it was a kind of meditative place. So, after enjoying its features and contributing to its economy, it was nice to simply go back in time and so forth. Have you ever discovered any interesting places and/or places where it strangely seemed like it was mesmerizingly stuck in another time?

We have Amish about 30 minutes away that host home cooked meals in their home. A member of my extended family has a monthly re-occuring reservation in which they invite whomever would like to go. The capacity is about 25 people @ $15 dollars a person, but the mean is wonderful.
The location is essentially Amish country, fields and horses as far as the eye can see. At night you can actually see the sky without light pollution. The home itself is well built and made of solid wood, and heated by a wood burner and fire. It is lit as bright as an electrical home on the interior by gas lamps hung from the ceiling on hooks. All the people wear the standard bland colors with beards and bonnets, etc. The means are wonderful as it is a homemade 4 course meal. Food includes : Date Pudding with real cream, Pies of various flavors, Noodles in gravey, Chicken, Ham, Pork, or turkey for a meat(One of the four per vist), Mashed potatos, green beans and corn, Homemade bread, butter, and jam. Interesting sitting at a table in a home without electricity, quite out of the norm everything is. Back to the country.

i used to love to visit my old man's stomping grounds. my grandfather had a farm that was absolutely tranquil. it had everything: windmill, water well, horses, cows, pigs, chickens, donkeys, agriculture, hunting rifles etc. i loved it. everything was so old fashioned.

Where I used to live up in Moree its like living in the 70's. Everyone complaigns about the Aboriginal crime rate, which like 1970's rural Australia is still really high.
Theres still segregation in the town because of a river. All the Music played on car stereos is pre-Back in Black AC/DC, Led Zeppellin and Pink Floyd. Theres no new cars just old HX/HK/HT Holden Kingswoods and FC Falcons. All the towns income is from the pubs, the cotton fields and the stock yards out around the town. And theres a bounty depot for collecting money on your feral animals as big as like a department store. Its like heaven on Earth. |

That was beautiful.
When I was younger, my grandparents bought a small house by a lake in this town called Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. Everyone in the town knew each other, and my grandparents only stayed there in the summer, so town friends would check on their house every week two to make sure everything held up (even though it wasn't really necessary to do it so often). It had a really small arcade where parents would take their children called FunLand, and it had a really big candy store that sold any kind of candy you could ever think of (only they'd be expired). I used to love it there. About five years ago, though, it went completely commercial. Houses are being sold for way too much, ski resorts have opened, FunLand has grown to have rows and rows of arcade games, a mini-golf court, and go-carts. Traffic is a bitch. No one knows anyone else because no one cares to be friendly anymore. Shame.

First part sounded like Earthbound's town... The scene you described at the end reminded me of the Pretenders classic "My City Was Gone." |

we have some friends with some relo's up there, supposed to be like stepping into a time machine... i guess a lot of rural australia is like that though. But yeh, they said there's still a bit of animosity between the races, unfortunately.

There was a spot about 2 hours outside Moree called WeeWaa, a regular place for the Mundi Mangler, and they still have a fight every Sundya afternoon. Theres a pub one end of the main street for the abos and a pub down the other for the white fellas and they meet in the middle with bits of wood and cricket bats and fence posts all kinda stuff and just belt shit out of each other.

EDIT: ![]() At the bottom there. Theres beaches on both sides (obviously) which is awesome. Last edited by SuperLuigiBros; 01-14-2007 at 07:20 AM. |

The town I live in is quaint.
It's in a valley, pretty much. There are maybe 1000 people here. We have a school and a gas station. They just built the gas station, which has a Subway a year and a half ago. There are no grocery stores. There used to be a movie store, but it closed. My best friend's dad owns the mechanic's garage in the middle of town. and the best part is the lake. I love the lake. 2nd cleanest lake in Pennsylvania. There are 3 long docks, one with boats on either side and the other 2 for people to go on. There is a tower with 2 diving boards. There is a candy shack with all kinds of snacks, which I have ran for my friends a few times. and there is a WWF Royal Rumble pinball machine which has a broken tilt, so you can pick it up. It's been the cause of multiple injuries, including many many bruises. I believe the high score is 10,000,000,000. |

A little island off the coast of South Australia called Kangaroo Island.
I went to 'KI' for a school trip 2 years ago, an island only accesable by a ferry. We stayed at a campsite that was in a remote part of the island, little wooden dorms that were constructed in the 70's sometime. Some of the posters in the dorms even dated as far back as 1972. At the campsite there was even a little cubby house painted in hippy colours, presumably from the 60's/70's era.
