SEGA: PS3 will win. Wii Will look "dated"

"How can they design products that aren't too derivative?"
Scott Steinberg, vice president of marketing for SEGA US, has said he is "concerned" about the future of the Wii - suggesting that PS3 is more likely to be the market leader in this console cycle.
"I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool," he told Reuters. "I'm not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007."
According to Steinberg, Nintendo's console could be left behind as developers begin to exploit the full potential of rival machines. "The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3," he predicted.
"How much value can developers and creative folks get out of this wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now?" Steinberg said.
"How can they design products that aren't too derivative of what's already out there?"
Reuters reports that Sega believes PlayStation 3 will ultimately win this console battle. Steinberg said, "We know the PS3 pool is pretty deep. There's a lot to exploit there."

of course he has a point...and there are going to be a lot of downloadable motion sensing games for the ps3.....at a very cheap price....super rub a dub is already a good start.....btw i own a wii just for the awesome nintendo exclusive games....and the motion sensing represent just the tip of the iceberg....

Sega is a big name to be saying such things. I think if anything this will help to encourage more positive PR for the PS3. I kinda have to agree with him in that the Wii is a media "fad" of sorts, sooner or later the media will find something new for the lemmings to go after and the Wii will just be left to collect dust on their entertainment stands.

Hm...

Sega was my favourite console maker until (incl.) DC... Then they screwed up by pulling it. Their first major screw up was when there was NO Sonic game on either the 32x or Saturn and the 3D ones were plain rubbish (Sonic Adventure had its share of fun but... nothing beats Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles)

I hope Virtua Tennis 3 drops in price fairly quickly, then I might get it :D



And now to the real matter at hand. Will the Wii lose its appeal? Time will tell, but my view tells me yes, it will. Graphics do matter when seeing a game... And how to people make their decision? Often thru ads... more often printed ads and videos, which mostly only show how good something looks. Right now the Wii has two advantages. A much lower price (with included, but not that good game) and the "wow" factor, which will stop rather soon, if no good new games hit.

Its pretty obvious that the Wii is enjoying being the affordable console with a twist.... But it is equally obvious that as more people switch to HDTV's and the price fo the PS3 continues to fall more and more people will be interested in the PS3.

The Wii is sitting in a nice niche right now. They are cheap and do not require a new HDTV to get the most out of the system, but that is not the future

A fad, yes that must have been what made PS2 so popular with the casuals for the past 7 years.

Yes, I can see a mass exodus now of Wii gamers and their target audience suddenly being hypnotized by the pretty graphics of PS3 (of which according to Gamespot the X360 won the latest round of graphics battles) and will leave behind what drew them into gaming or rekindled their love for it in the first place.

It's so clear now. In August 2008, The Wii will die as people everywhere suddenly stop enjoying physical gaming and are enticed by higher resolutions.

Give em a fucking break guys. The Wii doesn't appeal to you so how the hell are you supposed to assume how others that it does appeal to will suddenly find what you enjoy more appealing? It's not like X360 hasn't been out for over a year already and why hasn't everyone been enamored with it yet? Huh? If this whole graphics thing is supposed to cull people in, why didn't X360 already or PS3 now? Why did last gens weakest at graphics do the best at sales?

I think if anything Nintendo will have to work harder to keep sales where they are currently at once the media hype wears thin. I think this is why people like this exec and analysts think that Nintendo will lose their grip and sales will fall. Consumers do follow fads, and the media does exploit it for ratings. To say the media didn't give Nintendo a ton if not the majority of their sales from this fad would be ridiculous.

It won't be the death of anything, just a substantial loss of sales compared to now.

im gunna say 2-3 years. once SixaxiS support gets more expanded and HDTV become the majority i have the feeling many will See PS3 as a Wii with better grafix. right now PS3 is old style game play with big grafix only if you have a 2000usd+ TV

but 2-3 years worth of HDTV sales + growing SixaxiS support + PS3 price drops will eventualy make Wii look very dated. but for right now the Wii has the lime light.

the majority of the public has no idea PS3 can do motion gameplay as well but that will change in time.

Jax, so when the PS3 is 'down' to $350.00 and the Wii down to $150.00 you think their will be a big change based on an expanded HD market and PSEye?
