Best Frontman?
Anyone who knows me knows my answer: Ian Curtis. A close second goes to Morrissey, and the next few are:
Freddy Mercury Robert Plant Roger Daltrey Johnny Rotten Phil Lynott EDIT: Robert Smith I'm sure I'm leaving out a few of my personal favorites, but for the most part that's how it goes for me. Thoughts? List your top 5?

I'm honestly not knowledgable enough to judge some of them or make a list, but by instinct I'd put Mercury first. The man could sing, good lord he could sing.
On a side note, I saw "We Will Rock You," a musical based entirely off of Queen's music and their legacy, in London's West End. The show rocked, no pun intended.

Claudio Sanchez has a unique voice (I hate it but I'm not going to bash) but does he really have the stage prescence to be considered "the best frontman?"
It's hard to even list him in this thread among names like Curtis, Morrissey, Daltrey, Plant, and Mercury. |

Ozzy was a great frontman as well. And Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden can command a crowd like no other. And what about The Lizard King, Mr. Mojo Rising, the one and only Jim Morrison. Nobody can scream like Rob Halford. David Lee Roth anyone? Roger Daltrey rocks as well.

I haven't heard much Cryptopsy but I hear people talking about them all the time. I should probably check them out.

My top
Thom Yorke What an interesting little man. He has one of my favorite voices ever. The essence of Radiohead, but let's not forget the rest of the band. *I now lie in wait for unwanted opinions* Mike Patton What a psycho. Well no, he's probably the best and most diverse frontman I've ever experienced. Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Eyvind Kang, some Dillinger Escape Plan, and some solo stuff, and probably more. Les Claypool What a way with words he has. And one of the best bassists of our time. Primus is so great. MF Doom What a comic book supervillain. Not only a great frontman, but a great backman too. Oh, but MF Doom, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Madvillain, whatever else he's done (various many productions) are not bands. Madlib What another alter-ego festival. Madlib, Madvillain, Jaylib, Lootpack, Yesterdays New Quintet, etc. I guess YNQ could be considered a band, although it is only a quintet of one. Dan The Automator What a not-so-much-frontman-as-is-backman. He's the mastermind behind a ton of some excellent music collaborations. Deltron 3030, Dr. Octagon, Lovage, and I think he had a hand in Gorillaz too. ...And the other great ones mentioned in this thread who I don't know as much about. Speaking of Freddy Mercury, I too saw that 'We Will Rock You' musical. It was excellent! (With the word 'excellent' in all caps.) Queen is so great! Ben Elton is also great! Vie-Dae-Oh!!! |
